Inspiring Conversations with Jon Martin of Fungi Jon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jon Martin.

Hi Jon, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
While working at a local produce store, we sold fresh wild mushrooms brought in from North Carolina. As an avid hiker in Florida, I begin encountering some of the same species we sold in the store. I became fascinated by the fact that there was edible fungi native to our land and began identifying mushrooms as a past-time. As I became more experienced, local community began to know me as a dedicated mushroom identifier, and Fungi Jon soon became my title. I was approached by a local school to teach a mushroom identification program. From there, I began teaching more classes and continued to learn and deepen my connection with fungi. I also was a foodie interested in local agriculture, hence my job, and enjoyed cooking. I began making granola as a trail snack with local ingredients and began doing farmers’ markets with granola, as encouraged by friends who enjoyed it greatly. Gaia Granola was the beginning of my entrepreneur path, and I made many connections while learning business by experience and getting to know the Central Florida market. Eventually, I felt a change was necessary to integrate my passion for fungi into my work, and so my intention shifted to learn gourmet and medicinal mushroom farming to integrate my passion for mushrooms, food, and local organic agriculture. With mushrooms providing the most traction out of all things I had attempted in the past, the path ahead was clear to me. With hard work, dedication, investment, and lots of research, I began our farm under Fungi Jon LLC in 2019. Today we produce thousands of pounds per month of top quality organically-produced gourmet & medicinal mushrooms and provide a connection to the world of fungi for others to join in – from working with our mushrooms in the kitchen to learning in the classroom or the forest.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Obstacles are inevitable in almost any business. With a greater picture in mind, no matter how difficult we have overcome it and grown from it. Growing a living product, whether indoor or outdoor, is full of obstacles and challenges. Mushrooms are highly perishable and require specific parameters for success. Controlling our environment specific to certain species’ needs, growing multiple varieties in a shared space, and creating maximum efficiencies in our operation has been full of obstacles and challenges. In the process, we have learned and applied new concepts that have brought us closer to more success and the ability to scale our operation sustainably.

We’ve been impressed with Fungi Jon, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Fungi Jon is a leading agricultural producer of top-quality organic gourmet & medicinal mushrooms. We are a start-to-finish operation, with complete control of every step of our growing process, utilizing only the purest materials in our production. We supply wholesale & retail outlets, provide mycology education & produce fungi superfoods.

We all have different ways of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success for me personally involves having a strong connection with nature and feeling a genuine sense of fulfillment and purpose. In business, creating a model that allows sustained future growth and provides a service which inspires, helps, and nourishes others. Hearing of the health benefits and the joys our customers express about our products is a reminder we are on the right path. To know our products may also help others deepen their connection with the natural world brings it full circle.
