Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Connor
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always been a big fan of movement, anatomy and biomechanics, which is why I majored in Exercise and Sports Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
After college, I landed a job as a physical therapist technician, assisting an incredible physical therapist. Working for this seasoned PT, I saw firsthand how she helped people heal with exercise and hands-on treatment. Her mentorship solidified my desire to become a physical therapist.
Once I graduated from the University of Saint Augustine for Health Sciences with a doctorate in physical therapy, I focused my career on treating patients with orthopedic conditions, like rotator cuff injuries, ankle sprains and low back pain.
I became interested in many specialty topics as well, attaining advanced certification in vestibular physical therapy, which helps patients with vertigo and balance issues.
Over time, I noticed that a few patients with low back, tailbone and hip pain weren’t improving as well as others. I realized I was missing a critical component of caring for these conditions: the pelvic floor.
I began to explore postgraduate training in pelvic health physical therapy and became even more passionate about the specialty after experiencing pregnancy and postpartum issues myself.
I started my own physical therapy practice, Connect Physical Therapy, so I can work one-on-one with women, helping them address their pelvic floor conditions, orthopedic issues and wellness concerns.
My priority is to make sure patients feel safe, understood and cared for with an individualized treatment plan designed to help them achieve their goals.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like starting any business, there are bumps along the way. One of the challenges of starting a small physical therapy practice is that no one knows you exist. Everyone knows about the large, hospital system physical therapy clinics, but not so much about the local, specialty practices. While marketing can be a challenge, it has also been unbelievably rewarding to become more involved in the community and spread the word of what excellent, holistic physical therapy looks like.
We’ve been impressed with Connect Physical Therapy, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the owner of Connect Physical Therapy. The practice specializes in women’s pelvic health and orthopedic physical therapy.
Connect Physical Therapy is known for extended and flexible appointment times, enhanced patient-therapist relationships, hands-on, holistic treatment, and convenient mobile services provided at home.
I’ve been a physical therapist for many years now, and I knew that when I started Connect Physical Therapy I wanted to make sure I was able to give my patients the time and attention they deserve. That’s why the first visit is a 90-minute appointment and follow-up visits are 60 minutes. Moreover, every visit is one-on-one with the same physical therapist. Our patients won’t be shuffled off to work with an aide or be left alone on a machine or while exercising.
My goal is to provide patients with the best care possible, which means not only providing individuals with relief, but also figuring out the root cause of the problem in order to prevent their symptoms from returning. Additionally, I understand that everyone’s goals, histories and experiences are different, which is why every person is given a unique physical therapy plan of care based on their specific needs.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Thinking about how to answer this question makes me feel really lucky. I feel overwhelmingly blessed to have so many wonderful, happy childhood memories that it makes this question difficult to answer.
My parents were people who loved to entertain and have everyone come to our house for parties, holidays and regular gatherings. My father loved to play the guitar and sing with friends and family. My brothers and I liked to swim, ride our bikes and create new adventures with each other and our friends. We all loved competing in sports and games so there was never a dull moment.
With all of these joyful memories flooding my mind, I am still able to choose one today, and that is because the season is upon us. I believe my love for Halloween really stems from a Halloween party my parents threw when I was around 4 years old.
There is something really special about the orange and purple glowing lights, carved pumpkins and magic of Halloween that makes me feel cozy and excited all at the same time. Although I was so young, this Halloween party is still vivid in my mind.
All of our friends and family showed up to our house in their wild costumes. I saw pirates, princesses and Frankenstein. My dad built a maze in the foyer using black tarp and spray paint, which really set the tone as you entered. There was food and candy, creepy music, scary stories and spooky decorations. I remember staying up way past my bedtime and never wanting the night to end.
And so my love for Halloween continues. And in case you were wondering, yes, I already have my Halloween decorations out!
