Inspiring Conversations with Jvauni Johnson of Stay True & Company

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jvauni Johnson.

Jvauni Johnson

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I began in the music industry on a quest to become an artist. I dabbled as a vocal performer, an audio engineer, even a producer. Along my journey, I was blessed the opportunity to travel the world and live many experiences, so I decided to pick up a camera in order to capture those moments. What I didn’t know was that I was fulfilling another passion of the visual arts. As I continued to capture my life other people started to notice and as for those same services. What I thought was a time capsule for myself became an opportunity and service for others. It started out small in clubs and other artists and grew into working with multi-million-dollar companies. I suppose the peak would be to put out a documentary and/or feature film but who knows. Here we are 15 years later. I’m also getting ready to publish a book titled ‘Melanin: Adore Thy Woman’. This volume is a celebration of women with melanin skin. It will be my first publication but certainly not my last.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been smooth. In a day and age where digital real estate is large and wide, the gap between “content creator”. professional video production company, solo filmmaker, and A.I. is shortening. The more abundant something is, the lower the market value. The quality isn’t the same but in order to exist as a business, we have to charge business prices. The world is only becoming more digital. Places like NY City and Tokyo have already been living in the future with digital billboards offering ad space or even 3D installations like The Sphere Las Vegas. We’re even at the point that we casually have drone shows. Competition is healthy but it’s a constant battle trying to provide services to everyone from the rising social media star up to the mega conglomerates and everything in the middle when everyone thinks they can just pick up a camera and start working. Unfortunately, some people would prefer taking a risk with the amateur at a low cost than dealing with an expert in the field who charges much more.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Stay True & Company?
We specialize in the creation of digital art e.g. Photo & Video. We do our best to take that hint of an idea and bring it to life. Whether it’s an ad for your business, or something as intimate as your wedding, we want you to be as present to the moments whilst we handle the rest. You shouldn’t have to run a business or memorize your vows AND pray you remembered to hit record on the camera your uncle let you borrow on a shaky tripod.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
I suggest to anyone that’s starting out, or even considering pivoting into this business, to learn business. Take a class, watch YouTube videos, gain as much knowledge as possible, and try to put it into practice. What they don’t tell you is that you don’t have to be the best with a camera. You can always hire the best with a camera. You don’t have to be the best marketer; you can always hire them as well. You have to learn how to take a business that’s generating $0 or even at a deficit and turn it into something more if you want to thrive. Otherwise, keep it as a hobby and enjoy it.
