Today we’d like to introduce you to Kerwin Scott.
Kerwin, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Dr. Kerwin Scott, and I’m the owner and periodontist at Clermont Periodontics & Implant Center. After graduating from the University of Florida’s advanced Education Program in Periodontics, I decided to open my own practice in Clermont, Florida, to provide specialized care in a comfortable, patient-focused environment. Clermont Periodontics & Implant Center focuses on education, prevention, and personalized treatment. Our services include periodontal surgery, soft tissue grafting, dental implants, extractions, sedation, and full-mouth rehabilitation.
In addition to serving patients, I’m also a courtesy faculty member at Meharry Medical College, where I support the next generation of dentists. Our practice regularly hosts student shadowing opportunities for pre-dental and dental students interested in learning more about periodontics.
Our motto is “Healthy Gums, Confident Smiles,” which reflects our belief that oral health plays a major role in overall confidence and well-being. Every patient who walks through our doors receives care designed to restore both health and self-assurance — one smile at a time.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like most small business owners, the journey hasn’t been completely smooth. Opening a specialty dental practice comes with challenges — from finding the right location and building a strong team, to managing the demands of both patient care and business operations. One of the biggest adjustments was balancing the clinical side of dentistry with the administrative responsibilities of running a growing practice. There’s always something to learn in areas like staffing, technology integration, and insurance coordination that I am constantly improving upon.
Despite those challenges, every step has been worth it. Seeing patients regain their confidence after treatment and knowing we’re improving their long-term health makes the effort worthwhile.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
At Clermont Periodontics & Implant Center, we focus on the foundation of every healthy smile — the gums and supporting structures. We specialize in periodontal surgery, soft tissue grafting, dental implants, extractions, sedation, and full-mouth rehabilitation. My goal as a periodontist is to help patients restore function, health, and confidence through customized treatment plans that fit their individual needs. We’re known for delivering high-quality, evidence-based care in a welcoming environment. Every patient who walks through our doors is treated like family, and our team takes the time to educate patients so they understand their treatment and long-term oral health goals.
What sets us apart is our commitment to collaboration and trust. We work hand in hand with general dentists throughout Central Florida to ensure every patient receives seamless, coordinated care. That’s why we’ve earned the reputation as “your dentist’s favorite periodontist.”
Brand-wise, I’m most proud that our practice reflects professionalism, integrity, and genuine care. Our motto — “Healthy Gums, Confident Smiles” — truly captures what we stand for. We don’t just treat gums; we help people feel better about themselves, eat without discomfort, and smile again with confidence.
Whether someone comes to us through a referral or finds us on their own, we want them to know that at Clermont Periodontics & Implant Center, they’re receiving expert care rooted in compassion, precision, and lasting results.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice for anyone starting out — whether in dentistry or any other field — is to stay focused on your purpose and your patients. It’s easy to get caught up in the business side, but never lose sight of why you started. Clinical skills continue to imporve with time and experience, but building trust with people will sustain your career. I also recommend surrounding yourself with good mentors and reliable partners. No one succeeds alone. Having a supportive network of professionals, colleagues, and even patients who believe in your work makes all the difference.
One thing I wish I had known early on is that running a practice is very different from practicing dentistry. There’s a learning curve in leadership, staffing, and balancing clinical excellence with daily operations. It takes time, patience, and a willingness to keep learning.
Most importantly, remember that reputation matters more than marketing. When you do good work, treat people right, and stay consistent, word spreads.
