Today we’d like to introduce you to Lara Asous.
Hi Lara, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey began a little over ten years ago. At the time, I was still married and pursuing a completely different degree in college when I was first introduced to psychology. I fell in love with it instantly. Psychology helped me see life through a new lens—it made me feel empowered, understood, and capable of creating change.
Shortly after, I went through a divorce and found myself unsure about what direction I wanted my life to take. What I did know was that I wanted to heal, grow, and be better for myself and for my daughters. Therapy played a big role in that process. It helped me rebuild, reflect, and reconnect with who I wanted to become.
As I continued to look at my life, my culture, and the values that mattered to me, I realized that becoming a therapist was my path. I chose Marriage and Family Therapy because it encompasses everything I care deeply about—individuals, relationships, families, communication, healing, and connection.
Through this work, I want to help individuals become better versions of themselves, feel validated, and feel empowered. I want to help couples strengthen their communication and navigate challenges with understanding. I want to help families grow stronger and healthier. For me, that is incredibly meaningful and rewarding.
Most importantly, I want to be a role model for my daughters—to show them that healing is possible, that trauma doesn’t have to make you bitter, and that pain can be transformed into empathy, compassion, and purpose.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Challenges have been a constant part of my journey. When I was working on my master’s degree, I was a single mom working full time. Balancing parenthood, a career, schoolwork, and clinical hours was incredibly demanding. There were many nights I felt overwhelmed, wondering how I would manage it all.
Later, when I moved to Florida, I had to start over in many ways. Finding a new supervisor and getting re-established delayed my progress and tested my patience and commitment. Challenges showed up in different forms and at different stages—sometimes quietly, sometimes all at once.
There were moments when I felt like giving up. But each time, I found the perseverance to keep going. I reminded myself of my purpose, my daughters, and the people I hoped to help one day. Every setback became a lesson, and every challenge pushed me to stand back up, stronger and more determined.
Losing my dad was the most challenging experience of my life. Everything I do, I do for him. I carry the hope that he’s looking down at me and feeling proud. I think about everything he went through for us—as an immigrant, a father, a man who sacrificed so much—and that becomes my strength. Because of him, I keep going.

How do you think about luck?
I’m not sure if what I’ve experienced in life is good luck or bad luck—but I do believe we all have a unique journey and a purpose. What truly makes the difference is how you choose to see your life and how you respond to the things that happen to you. I don’t believe you can move forward by blaming others or staying stuck in what went wrong.
The challenges, obstacles, pain, and even betrayal I’ve faced have shaped me, but I chose to use them to become a better, stronger, more compassionate person. For me, it all comes back to self-worth, self-love, and the way you see yourself. When you treat yourself with compassion, everything shifts.
We all have a choice: you can believe that good things are still possible even when difficulties show up, or you can give up. Your mindset is everything. It’s the difference between staying stuck and growing into who you’re meant to be.
