Today we’d like to introduce you to Lord Hugh.
Hi Lord, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in Lauderhill, fl. The oldest of three boys from my Jamaican parents. What’s actually ironic is my mom worked for Publix, and my father was a truck driver. My first job was Publix; now I’m a truck driver… talk about a full circle. Anyway, I worked for Publix for 5 years, then got into banking. I worked for numerous banks through a 7-year span. My salary was continuing to increase as, but there was always an unhappiness or feeling of settling. I felt like that back in my Publix days as well, but I definitely didn’t come up with a plan to escape. On March 4 of 2021, I finally handing in my resignation letter. I saved as much as I ever had during the pandemic. Being an essential worker during the COVID lockdown had some financial benefits for sure. I decided to buy a rental car, put it on Turo and use that for passive income after leaving the bank. I also was on the lookout for trucks and found mine at an amazing deal and went for it. Boom!!! Rental company and moving company at the same damn time.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Smooth road? Ha! It doesn’t work like that. Taking risks is uncomfortable. A lot of my learning HAD to come from experience. I’ve had a rental car’s window shot out, two trucks vandalized simultaneously, dishonest teammates, and companies disappear once it’s time to pay; I’ve definitely had my fair share of struggles. At the end of the day, it was never the end of the world. Can’t sulk in what you can’t control, but every mishap has been a lesson I learned from. I always appreciate the lesson… afterword.
As you know, we’re big fans of Hughs Helpers. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
The Hughs Helpers brand is built off teamwork and good spirit. Whether it’s a team of us moving a 4-bedroom house across town in a limited time frame or one of our freight drivers delivering to the unknowns of north Florida, good energy and teamwork is what is always projected. We enjoy relieving the stresses that come with moving or relocation, especially in the neighborhoods we grew up in as well.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Everybody in my personal phone deserves credit lol. My father was in the Batman role early on in my moving business. I learned a lot about trucks, trucking, and all kinds of tricks and tips for moving furniture. My girlfriend Alexis is the number one cheerleader and supporter to this day. She’s also helped me structure and plan most of my business moves. My mother and grandma are not far behind, of course. My crew for both freight and moving has consisted of my father, my little brother Jason, and my close friends Mic and Andre. I can say that I still have a running prosperous business through the sweat and hard work of them. A lot of my classmates from High School have shown a lot of support. I appreciate all of it.
