Inspiring Conversations with Mani Johnson of MK Copywriting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mani Johnson.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
So…my story (or career) starts and ends in the same place — an agency. The only difference, I now own an agency instead of working for one. My agency is called MK Copywriting.

It was quite the journey getting here. I experienced racial harassment, toxic work cultures, extremely low pay, overtime, and exhaustion. But I can be the first to tell you: it was worth it!

All of the negative has been transformed into the positive. Every loss I considered a lesson. Witnessing the wrong inspired me to be the right.

Because of that, MK Copywriting is all that…and a bag of chips! It is a digital copy agency dedicated to black business owners like me. Our focus is strategic and soulful brand storytelling that supports my clients’ business goals.

Essentially, it is a safe, happy, and healthy place. This is where brands can authentically express themselves in a way that gets them seen, heard, and well understood by those who matter most – their dream clients.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Diving deeper into the challenges…yes, there was harassment and toxicity throughout my career. But what hurts most…. just the feeling of not being seen or heard.

Oftentimes, I reported incidences or concerns to uninterested management. I witnessed others experience the same and were silenced by the shame. Even my clientele unknowingly faced negative biases that ultimately impacted their brand.

I realized that everyone has a voice. Employees. Employers. Brands. Businesses. Clients. However, I feel like they all should have the opportunity to be heard. Just taking the time to listen to someone opens the doors for understanding. By understanding, you begin to look past any stereotypes or preconceived notions. You begin to see others for who they really are as well as utilize your special purpose.

Just by listening and seeing, you could be the solution to someone’s biggest problem. You could become their best friend or closest ally. You could also share what you see with others who are blinded.

Between social media, blogs, and texting, it seems like so many people are talking. But, are we truly listening? Seeing?

At MK Copywriting, we do…plus so much more.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about MK Copywriting?
All about MK Copywriting.

I can’t help but smile when I think of it. This is my baby!

Anyways, it is a digital copy agency dedicated to black-owned businesses. To break it down, copy is just a marketing term. It refers to all the words used to advertise a business (e.g., social media captions, text on a billboard, words in a brochure, or on a website). We, as consumers, interact or read copy every day.

My team takes the time to write those words based on our clients’ brand story and business goals.

Also, I do want to say that black-owned businesses are our niche. They are NOT our only clients. Just wanted to put that out there!

Our signature service is strategic brand storytelling. We sit down with every client and chitchat about their origin, purpose, values, transformation, struggles, goals, you name it! Then, we create and execute a content strategy (a.k.a. brand storytelling strategy) that authentically markets their business.

It’s crazy because there are so many agencies out there – like A LOT. But what makes MK Copywriting so special – our values and approach. We care. We care about our clients, content quality, results, and authenticity.

I’ve also developed a five-step framework that allows my team to operate efficiently and excellently. Honest and transparent communication and customer satisfaction is a priority as well. We deliver nothing but the best for our clients.

I really cannot believe I created this brand with my own two hands. It is everything! It means so much to share it with others!

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
One of my favorite childhood memories is when I won the Young Literary Author award. It was a book writing competition that I won in the 5th grade. As the winner, I had a rare opportunity to have lunch with an author…

Unfortunately, the lunch landed on the same day as my class field trip to the Orlando Science Center! So, I completely ditched the author to live my best life.

A plot twist with no regrets.
