Inspiring Conversations with Maria Salvatierra of Mary Asesor de Seguros

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Salvatierra.

Hi Maria, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in Venezuela, and I have lived in America since 2017. I have a background in engineering and I used to work as an IT consultant, a beautiful profession I worked for about 15 years. The political and economic crisis of my country forced me and my family to migrate to United States.

In my country, we left not only our loved ones, family and friends but also our greatest memories. It took me a while to understand why this happened to us, but as my mom would say: “if a door closes, two more will open for you”.

At the beginning, I tried to work on what I was doing; however, it was not easy to get a position in this competitive market. My degree or experience couldn’t be validated, so I had to consider other ways thrive.

One day I saw an offer to be an Insurance Agent. It was nothing related to my prior experience as a consultant, however these two had one thing in common: Helping people.

I knew how hard is arriving in this country and not having an insurance protection. So, I knew this is an important activity and I had a responsibility with other immigrants.

I acted quickly and enrolled to get the license. Since then, I help more than 200 families including people from different countries like Egypt, Italy, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Colombia as well as other Americans.

One of the things I love the most about my job is knowing my client can trust they are in good hands. I always support my clients as much as I can, specially because I like to educate and teach them about how to use their medical services wisely.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Having migrated to another country has probably been the most difficult thing that my family and I have faced in our life.

It has been a slow process but at a safe pace. My family has always been the main engine that motivates me to get ahead. Without their support, I probably would not even have left my country. Having a good attitude, faith and hope in a better future and believing in myself, my talents and abilities is what has made this journey a little easier.

The key has been providing good service, offering honesty and transparency to all people who I interact as a professional.

That’s the reason my main source of new customers is the referral and recommendations from my customers.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am an independent insurance agent; my personal brand is “Mary Asesor de Seguros” (Mary Insurance Advisor). I am a specialist in health, life, complementary and final expenses insurance, but the core of my business are ACA plans (Affordable Care Act) which are low-cost health insurance subsidized by the government through a tax credit.

I consider myself as an advisor. I always choose the best option for my clients based on their specific needs. In my humble opinion, any agent can sell insurance, but only a good advisor can guide and educate their customers.

I’m always on-call for my customers in case they have a need or question. I work with the most important Insurance companies in USA and sell in different states like: Florida, Texas, Illinois, North Carolina, Georgia, among others.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I did not consider myself as a risk-taking person. But after moving to this beautiful country, I realized how capable we are when times become hard.

Since then, taking risks is crucial in my life. I truly believe that is the only way to grow and get out of your comfort zone.

I’m not going to say it is easy, but the result is always very rewarding. As Ghandi said: “when you take risks, you don’t lose. You either win or you learn.”
