Inspiring Conversations with Mary McCune of Mary McCune Photo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary McCune.

Hi Mary, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
For as long as I could remember I loved images but it wasn’t the still imagery that initially drew me in but the moving ones. I have early memories of reading letters between my mother and father, they were pen pals in their early courting days. I read countless lines between them about their love of movies, which ones they saw, which ones they liked and by virtue of them I developed a strong passion and connection for film.

It slowly developed into a little obsession, one that won’t go away, even now after all of these years.
Largely my background and education is in film production but the worlds of film and photography are interchangeable in my life as a creative outlet. Since 2019 I’ve really tried focusing solely on photography and developing my skills in that medium.

I find there is very little in the world that doesn’t inspire the work I do, I feel as though there is beauty in everything. Shooting people candidly always manages to provoke the best feelings, it truly speaks for itself. The best part of stills and moving images are the emotions it provokes and instills within everyone. It certainly feels like a powerful magic trick looking at someone looking at a photo that brings them back to a happy moment in time.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like anything new you try there are certainly challenges but you learn to grow through them with lots of mistakes and then learning from them. I remember being a nervous wreck having to give any direction for posing people in the beginning. You’re on the spot trying to make someone feel comfortable, often times you’ve never met before. You don’t quite know them and they don’t know you. For some people they don’t like their picture taken or they just want to make sure you are presenting them in their best light. Every situation provides it’s own unique pressure but with lots of practice and patience on both ends has helped to build my confidence to get the best out of each session.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Mary McCune Photo?
Largely my work focuses on weddings and family portraits, I think what sets me apart from others is my approach when interacting with people. On the top of my list is to make sure everyone has a good time and is comfortable. I like to present people candidly as much as possible. My aim is for people to look at their photos and feel like their vision of how they see themselves is reflected in the work, I feel as though I achieve that most times and it’s something I take pride in.

I think clients who are looking for more artistic yet natural photos are a perfect fit for my brand. With my background in film my photos lends itself to a blend of stylized and documentary style of shooting.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Most of my work features people but I have a huge passion and love for shooting animals as well. Most recently I’ve dived into a new venture of equestrian photography and I absolutely love it.
