Inspiring Conversations with Melina Perez of Save A Life Pet Rescue INC.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melina Perez.

Melina, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I began volunteering with Save A Life 11 years ago as a high school student earning Bright Futures hours, never imagining how deeply it would shape my life. I quickly fell in love with the mission: to save dogs from neglect, abuse, and abandonment. The rescue itself was founded by a woman named Nikki who saw a need in her community and took action, and she has never stopped fighting for animal rights.
Two years ago, I stepped into the role of Vice President, following a former president Anna who has been with the rescue since its very beginning. Her love and passion radiate through everything she does and continue to inspire the work we carry forward. In my role, I have made it my mission to strengthen our connection with the community and educate others on the importance of adopting and spaying/ neutering pets to help reduce overpopulation and overcrowded shelters.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a completely smooth road. Rescue work comes with emotional, financial, and logistical challenges such as limited resources, medical emergencies, and the heartbreak of seeing animals that have been failed by people.
There have been moments of burnout and tough decisions that weigh heavily on everyone involved.
That said, every challenge has reinforced why this work matters. The struggles have pushed us to grow, lean on our community, adapt, and advocate even harder for these dogs. Seeing lives saved, families formed, and dogs given second chances makes every obstacle worth it.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Save A Life Pet Rescue INC. ?
Save A Life is a nonprofit rescue that has been rooted in the heart of Central Florida for over 20 years. We specialize in pulling dogs from high-kill shelters in surrounding states and giving them a second chance at life. Once a dog comes into our care, they receive full veterinary treatment, rehabilitation as needed, and are lovingly prepared for adoption into forever homes.
What sets Save A Life apart is our unwavering commitment to dogs who are often overlooked- those coming from neglect, abuse, or abandonment. We are not government funded, which means our ability to continue saving lives and keeping our doors open relies entirely on community support, donations, and volunteers.
In recent years, we purchased land in Sanford, Florida, where we plan to build a Safe Haven that will allow us to expand our impact and save two to three times more dogs each year. This vision represents hope, growth, and sustainability for the future of rescue, but it can only become a reality through the continued support of our community.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I truly believe good luck played a significant role in both my life and this journey. As a teenager, I randomly stumbled across Save A Life while shopping in a plaza with my mom. At the time, I had no idea that walking into this rescue would completely change the course of my life. What started as volunteering turned into a lifelong passion, and even the place where I met my husband. We’ve now been together for 10 years, and today our two children are fully immersed in the mission as well by learning compassion, service, and the importance of helping dogs in need.
