Today we’d like to introduce you to Mimi HongAn Nguyen.
Hi Mimi HongAn , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always loved working with children and knew early on that I wanted a career where I could combine healthcare with making a positive impact on families. What drew me to pediatric dentistry specifically was the opportunity to help shape a child’s experience with healthcare in a positive way.
My academic journey started at the University of Florida with my bachelor’s degree in Psychology. I went on to get my Master’s in Medical Science at the University of South Florida and continued my Florida collegiate adventures at the University of Central Florida earning a bachelor’s in Health Science.
I completed my dental training and pediatric residency at the University of Florida College of Dentistry, and during that time it became clear to me how important early dental experiences are. A child’s first few visits can influence how they feel about dental care for the rest of their life. That idea really stuck with me and ultimately inspired me to create Sunbeams Pediatric Dentistry. My goal is to build a dental practice where children feel comfortable, parents feel supported, and dental visits can actually be something families look forward to.
I’ve grown up in Florida since my parents moved to Orlando when I was three years old so it’s incredibly rewarding to serve the community I grew up in and watch our patients grow up over the years while helping them build healthy habits and confident smiles.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey to founding Sunbeams Pediatric Dentistry hasn’t always been a perfectly smooth road. Like any entrepreneurial path, it’s been a series of steep climbs and rewarding views. Opening and growing a practice comes with a unique set of challenges that go far beyond the clinical side of dentistry; suddenly, you aren’t just a doctor, you’re an architect of a culture, a business strategist, and a team leader.
One of the most significant hurdles I’ve faced is the delicate act of balancing those three distinct roles: clinician, business owner, and leader. Because pediatric dentistry is so deeply relationship-driven, I’ve always been protective of our environment. I never wanted Sunbeams to feel transactional or rushed. To ensure every family feels seen and supported takes immense intentionality, time, and, most importantly, the right team by my side. Learning the “business side,” from logistics to recruitment, was a second education in itself.
Beyond the office walls, there is the ever-present challenge of balancing a growing practice with my own family life. It is the ultimate juggling act. As a pediatric dentist, I am reminded every single day of how quickly childhood passes, which makes my time with my own family feel even more sacred.
I’ve had to learn that “balance” isn’t a destination you reach and stay at; it’s a constant, daily adjustment. There are seasons where the practice requires 110% of my energy, and others where I have to intentionally unplug to be fully present at home for my boys. In many ways, being a parent has made me a better practitioner. It has given me a deeper level of empathy for the parents who walk through our doors. I understand their worries, their hectic schedules, and their hopes because I’m living those same experiences alongside them.
Looking back, these obstacles have been some of the most impactful parts of my story. They have pushed me to grow not just as a dentist, but as a person. Each challenge has forced us to refine the “Sunbeams experience,” ensuring that we are constantly improving for the families we serve.
As you know, we’re big fans of Sunbeams Pediatric Dentistry. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Sunbeams Pediatric Dentistry was created with one simple idea in mind: children deserve a positive and supportive dental experience. From the moment families walk through the door, our goal is to make them feel welcomed, comfortable, and confident in the care their child is receiving.
We care for children from infancy through their teenage years and provide a wide range of services, from preventive care and education to restorative treatment and sedation options for children who may need additional support during procedures. Pediatric dentistry requires a unique approach, and our team focuses heavily on communication, patience, and meeting each child where they are.
What I’m most proud of is the atmosphere we’ve created. Our team genuinely loves working with kids, and that energy makes a huge difference in the experience families have. Seeing a child go from nervous during their first visit to excited to come back is one of the most fulfilling parts of what we do.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
Success is rarely a solo endeavor, and as I look at how far Sunbeams Pediatric Dentistry has come, there are so many people who deserve credit for making this journey possible.
The bedrock of everything I have achieved is my parents. When I was just three years old, they escaped the war-torn communist regime of Vietnam to create a better life for my brothers and me. Growing up, I watched them sacrifice profoundly so that I could have the opportunity to study and pursue my dreams. They didn’t just tell me what hard work, dedication, and perseverance looked like—they lived it every single day. They remain my biggest cheerleaders, and their unwavering support is the quiet force behind every milestone I reach.
My clinical foundation was built at the University of Florida, where I was fortunate to have incredible mentors and educators. The faculty there instilled a sense of passion and dedication that was truly infectious; they didn’t just teach me how to be a dentist, they helped shape my entire philosophy of patient care.
Within the walls of the practice, I am extremely grateful for the Sunbeams team. A pediatric dental practice truly runs on the synergy of its members. Our staff brings an incredible amount of compassion and positivity to the office every morning. They are the ones who turn a clinical space into a welcoming environment, ensuring every family feels at home from the moment they walk through the door.
Finally, our patients and their families deserve a tremendous amount of credit. Trusting someone with your child’s health is a significant decision. Their belief in our mission and their continued support are what allow us to keep growing and doing the work we love in the community that raised me.
