Inspiring Conversations with Nia Bass of AMJ’s Bakery LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nia Bass.

Hi Nia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey into baking started 11 years ago, during a really uncertain season of my life. I had just lost my job while 8 months pregnant, and I found myself walking through Walmart—processing everything, trying to figure out my next steps. That’s when a man I’d never met before, stopped me and casually asked if I knew the ingredients to make a red velvet cake. I started listing them off, then he said something that changed everything: “How about I pay you to make it?”

That moment felt like a divine setup—a God-send. At the time, my best friend was trying to become a cake decorator at Publix, so we’d practice piping and decorating cakes together whenever we hung out. I was already spending my free time playing with frosting, so the opportunity felt natural. That man from Walmart became a weekly customer, ordering cakes from me consistently. From there, word of mouth began to spread. I gave away a lot of my practice cakes to friends, neighbors, and local families—and the orders kept coming in.

For years, I operated quietly and organically, baking from home while navigating life as a mom. On January 1st, 2022, I made the decision to officially launch AMJ’s Bakery. While I still run my business from home today, it’s now a fully structured operation with regular orders, seasonal flavor rotations, and a growing customer base. What began as a small side hustle has grown into a purposeful family-run business—one that brings joy to our community, one treat at a time.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Honestly, my biggest hurdle was getting over the fear of starting. I don’t like to fail, and the thought of putting myself out there was intimidating. But once I took that first step and officially launched AMJ’s Bakery, things moved forward with grace and steady growth.

For a long time, I didn’t experience many struggles—just learning and growing along the way. More recently, though, things have become a bit more challenging. Earlier this year, my 2-year-old had a major seizure, and that really shifted my focus. Managing my time has been hard because my family is always my first priority. At the same time, I’m still deeply committed to building this business—not just for myself, but for them. Balancing motherhood and entrepreneurship is tough, but it’s also what drives me every single day.

As you know, we’re big fans of AMJ’s Bakery LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
AMJ’s Bakery is a home-based, family-operated bakery built on love, creativity, and the belief that every celebration deserves something sweet and special. We specialize in small-batch, scratch-made desserts—cupcakes, cookies, macarons, and pound cakes—with both core flavors and seasonal rotations that keep things exciting. We also offer custom cakes and curated dessert boxes that give our customers something unique and personal for every occasion.

What sets us apart is that I always try to tie at least one flavor back to my Southern roots. Whether it’s a classic like red velvet or something more creative like our Sweet Tea cupcake, there’s always a nod to the comforting, familiar flavors I grew up with. But more than just flavor, it’s the genuine care that goes into everything we create. Each item is made with quality ingredients and crafted with intention. We’re personal, approachable, and community-focused.

I’m proud of how my brand reflects my family values. AMJ’s Bakery isn’t just about desserts—it’s about legacy, love, and building something that can bless others. We serve our customers with joy, operate with integrity, and continue to grow with purpose.

If you’re looking for desserts that taste like home but feel like a luxury, we’d love to serve you. From DoorDash orders to custom creations, AMJ’s Bakery is here to turn your sweetest moments into lasting memories.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I’d say a favor and blessings has played a role in my journey. That moment in Walmart felt random, but it completely changed the direction of my life. What started as a casual conversation with a stranger turned into my first consistent customer—and from there, things just started falling into place.

For a long time, I didn’t face many struggles. But earlier this year, when my 2-year-old had a major seizure, it shook everything. I had to temporarily close the business, take fewer orders, and wasn’t able to show up consistently on social media. My family is my first priority, and that season really tested my ability to balance it all. It wasn’t easy, and it definitely impacted the business, but I’m finding my rhythm again.

I do believe I’ve been blessed along the way—with opportunities, support, and resilience.
