From Scrubs to CEO
My name is Nika, and a few years ago, I was sleeping on someone else’s floor. I had lost everything. I was walking to my CNA job just to get a check every two weeks that never went over $700. That job barely covered anything—but I kept going. Being homeless pushed me to a level of ambition I didn’t know I had.
Eventually, I had to give up that CNA job because it wasn’t close enough to where I was staying. At that point, I didn’t have much going for myself. I was a high school dropout with no direction and no plan. But something in me refused to stay stuck. One day, I decided I was going to get my high school diploma. I started working a 9-to-5 and enrolled in college at the same time. I didn’t have it all figured out, but I knew I had to move.
Later, I made one of the scariest but most freeing decisions of my life: I quit my 9-to-5 and never looked back. I became a full-time entrepreneur. My first venture was dropshipping. While I worked, I hired other people to run the business for me—but I ended up losing a lot of money. They didn’t bring in any sales. It was discouraging, but instead of giving up, I chose to learn.
I started taking marketing courses. I studied everything I could about branding, sales, and how to reach the right audience. A year later, in February 2024, I launched my own marketing agency: Impactful Icons Enterprises. I built it to help other entrepreneurs who were in the same place I once was—launching something and hearing nothing but crickets.
Now, I help people turn those crickets into paying customers. I know what it feels like to give your all and still not make a single sale. That’s why I pour so much into what I do. My journey from scrubs to CEO wasn’t easy, but it was worth it. And I’m just getting started.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I remember working at a Burger King job, trying to keep things together while also selling lashes on the side. I was just 19 at the time—young, ambitious, but with no real direction. A dear friend of mine believed in me enough to invest in my lash business, and I’ll never forget that. But the truth was, I didn’t know how to sell much of anything. I had the product, I had the hustle, but I didn’t have the knowledge.
For years, I struggled with sales. I would post, promote, and push, but nothing was really converting. On top of that, I was a high school dropout. I was so used to working fast food jobs or bouncing between temp gigs, and I didn’t have any real certifications to fall back on. I felt stuck in a cycle—always moving, always trying, but never really getting anywhere.
