Today we’d like to introduce you to Randy Pulayya and Shauna Vo Pulayya.
Hi Randy and Shauna, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
(Randy’s answer)
For Shauna and me, West Indies Peppa Sauce isn’t just a business; it’s about sharing the authentic, vibrant flavors of the Caribbean and West Indies, flavors that have shaped my life. I’m Randy Pulayya, and my roots run deep in Guyanese-American soil. Growing up in Richmond Hill, Queens – what we lovingly call ‘Little Guyana’ – I was immersed in the rich tapestry of Caribbean culture. It’s a place where the air hums with the sounds of soca and the aroma of spices fills every corner. Shauna, my wife and business partner, brings her own incredible story to our table; her family immigrated from Vietnam, a journey marked by resilience and strength. We met, believe it or not, at JFK Airport in 2007, two travelers destined to cross paths.
My passion for pepper sauce started long before West Indies Peppa Sauce. It’s a legacy passed down from my mom and grandma. For over 20 years, I’ve been crafting these sauces, sharing them with friends and family wherever our travels took us – from Arkansas to Washington D.C., a year in South Korea, four years in Vietnam, and across more than 60 countries. Travel is in our blood, and it’s seasoned our perspective on food and culture.
When Shauna and I both faced layoffs, it felt like the universe was giving us a nudge. It was time to share these flavors with the world. We poured our hearts into creating West Indies Peppa Sauce, and the response has been overwhelming. From the moment we launched, the orders haven’t stopped. The energy at farmers’ markets is electric. People connect with our story, our brand, and, most importantly, the authentic flavors of our products.
What truly touches us is the emotional connection people have to our sauces. They tell us that our products taste like homemade family recipes, like the flavors they remember from being raised in Caribbean/West Indian homes. That’s what it’s all about for us. It’s about more than just selling hot sauce. It’s about preserving and celebrating the food culture of the Caribbean and West Indies, ensuring that future generations can experience its rich flavors. It’s about bringing joy and a taste of home to people, and ultimately, fulfilling our purpose and mission as a company. We’re not just selling a product; we’re sharing a piece of our heritage.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
(Shauna’s answer)
Has it been a smooth road? It’s been a mix, definitely. Owning and operating a business, especially a food business, is a wild ride with its ups and downs. But as the saying goes, typically things that are hard are worth it or when life gives you peppers, we make pepper sauce.
We’re juggling a lot. We have two young children, five and seven years old, and West Indies Peppa Sauce is just starting to find its footing, like a toddler learning to walk. This isn’t our first business venture, either. We’ve dipped our toes into other side hustles before, like sourcing apparel in Vietnam and running a marketing agency. But this one, this hot sauce business, feels different. It’s a bit of a surprise, really. We’ve both always been in the tech industry and never imagined we would be running a food business. But this was something we used every single day. Randy’s great-grandma’s pepper sauce wasn’t just a recipe; it was a staple in our kitchen. And whenever he made it for friends and family, the response was always the same: ‘Can I get some more of your hot sauce?
Despite the usual startup challenges, telling the story of West Indies Peppa Sauce and building our brand has flowed remarkably well. Randy’s experience from scaling startups to Fortune 100 companies in his sales roles at UPS and DHL Express, coupled with my marketing background in enterprise technology, have been key to our success. We’re passionate about giving our customers a truly great experience, from the quality of the product itself to every interaction they have with us and our brand, both online and offline. The product creation process also went relatively smoothly. Refining Randy’s great-grandma’s recipe wasn’t too difficult, as we already knew the core flavors that made it special.
One of the biggest struggles, however, has been navigating the regulatory side of a food business. Our previous ventures were much simpler. We didn’t have to deal with permits and licenses from the FDA or the Department of Agriculture. Depending on how you run your business, depends if you need to go through these hoops to ensure you’re a legit business. We wanted to make sure we had all our ‘i’s dotted and our ‘t’s crossed because we are serious about scaling this business. Ensuring we were fully compliant and meeting all the requirements was a learning curve, but it’s been essential for building a solid foundation.
It’s been a lot of work, but we’re passionate about sharing our purpose and mission for West Indies Peppa Sauce and when we get positive feedback directly from customers, it makes it all worth it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
(Randy’s answer)

We’re best known for our flagship products: WIPS Red Scotch Bonnet and WIPS Yellow Scotch Bonnet pepper sauces. These aren’t just any sauces; they’re rooted in a four-generation-old recipe from my great-grandmother, offering a taste of authentic Caribbean heritage. Our signature sauces, the citrusy Red Scotch Bonnet and the tangy Yellow Scotch Bonnet, are vegan, gluten-free, and all-natural, staying true to our belief in ‘keeping it real.’
We’re incredibly proud of our recent achievement: within just nine months of launching, we won the 2024 Spicy International Flavor Sauce of the Year—first place in the Caribbean category! This win, against formidable competition, validates our commitment to quality and authenticity.

And this is just the beginning—we have a whole product line in development, eager to share even more of our heritage with the world.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
(Shauna’s answer)
While many know that Randy and I lived abroad in South Korea and Vietnam, the ‘why’ behind it, and how it naturally led to West Indies Peppa Sauce, often surprises people. My story has a unique connection to Vietnam. My mother was adopted from there by a U.S. Military Veteran when she was just three years old, even before the official end of the Vietnam War. Growing up in a small town in Arkansas, I always dreamed of living abroad and learning a new language. Sadly, I never learned Vietnamese, as my mother was adopted, and my father, a Vietnamese refugee, perhaps didn’t see the importance of passing on his native tongue. So, when Randy and I decided to move to South Korea for a year, it was a dream come true. We never imagined it would turn into a five-year adventure, including a move to Vietnam and over the years we both picked up basic Korean and conversational Vietnamese.
For Randy, the desire to travel was deeply rooted in his late father’s experience. His father, working in construction, never had the chance to travel extensively. Randy, on the other hand, seized opportunities to study abroad in Australia and the UK during his time at the University of Florida. So, living abroad and exploring Asia was incredibly fulfilling for him. We share a passion for immersing ourselves in different cultures, meeting people, and of course, experiencing the diverse cuisines.
Food culture is especially important in Randy’s family. The women in his family dedicate time and use natural herbs, often from their own garden, to create authentic Guyanese dishes. Chicken curry, goat curry, dahl, roti, baji, and pumpkin are some of my favorites. The flavors are rich and distinctly West Indian, and pepper sauce is a staple. Randy’s mother encouraged him to learn to cook, and I’m fortunate to have such a skilled ‘Chef Pulayya’ at home. He’s been making pepper sauce for more than 20 years. Friends and family always raved about it, asking for more.
That’s how West Indies Peppa Sauce came to be. It wasn’t a calculated business plan; it was a natural evolution of our experiences and passions. Despite our long careers in the technology industry, the love for food, culture, and Randy’s pepper sauce recipe organically led us here. We’re incredibly excited to see where this journey takes us.
