Today we’d like to introduce you to Shanti Persaud.
Hi Shanti, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started in Media/Radio Broadcast almost 27 years ago, My father had a business in Radio and I came along as Administration taking care of various task around the radio station., I had no intentions of remaining in the family business I had plans to go into the medical field as Phlebotomy and Sonography. Yet in 2008 my father decided to go back to our country of origin and he left me to keep things going. I began to have to take on more responsibilities and I had to stretch myself to learn new things and look for ways to grow the company. It was though I was thrown in the ocean and told to sink or swim. Today in 2022 we have done more than swim we have won awards, expanded out signal and taken on a new frequency. WOKB has won 3 Stellar Awards for Gospel Station in the Large Market, we have gone from AM to FM and we now have 1680 AM and 101.7 FM. I did not do it on my own, WOKB is a family the employees have worked hard, pushed the station, and stood by my side for all of these years. We are now a staple in the community, a place that lends the mic to those who don’t have a voice and a community partner.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Ir has not been a smooth road, but because I was determined to swim and not sink and I had a team that held me up we made it! The struggles, have been many, finances, learning the ends and outs of radio, and just being a businesswoman who had no official training.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I have learned that it is important to prepare for the worst while things are going well. COVID 19 taught us all that an emergency plan needs to be in place and that we must put aside money for a rainy day,. It taught us how to be hit hard yet keep on pushing through it all. It was scary and could have taken us out but instead, we completed our goals to expand and now are better off than we were before COVID.
