Inspiring Conversations with Sherecka Brown of Unwritten Story LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherecka Brown.

Hi Sherecka, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
The year was 2015 and I was working in corporate America. I wasn’t happy and I needed something different for my future.  One day while idly scrolling on Pinterest, I came across a quote that said something like “Don’t spend 9-5 making someone else’s dream a reality and not spend 6-10 working on your own.” It caused me to reevaluate everything in my life. I wanted a fulfilling career, one where I could support myself while helping others. It reminded me of my early years in college, when I turned to therapy to navigate significant life changes. I immediately began my research, and a few weeks later I received an invitation to apply to a school with a satellite campus in Orlando. I thought, “Why not? This is exactly what I’ve been asking for.” From that point on, everything with my schooling fell into place. As I progressed, each experience confirmed that I had made the right decision. Success would come but It was a grueling 2 and a half years! I embodied the quote that sparked the journey– working 9a-5p then racing in traffic to get to school by 6p and oftentimes not leaving until 10pm. My final year was the most challenging, as I balanced work, school, and internship weekends. Needless to say graduation was a welcomed relief. After graduation, I spent my time searching for jobs. Working as a counseling intern meant I was still under someone else’s supervision and helping to build their vision rather than my own. I continued in that role until I became fully licensed in Florida, which is a much more demanding process than many realize. After becoming licensed, I finally had the freedom to shape my practice the way I wanted, to serve clients in ways that aligned with my values, and to take full control of my day-to-day life and schedule.
The name Unwritten Story was inspired by the quote on my graduation cap, from Natasha Bedingfield’s song “Unwritten”: “The rest is still unwritten.” It reminded me that my story wasn’t finished. Each day is a new page, and while we all have past experiences—traumas or hardships—there are still pages to fill with healing, triumph, and new experiences that we can fully claim as our own.
In October 2023, following my birthday trip, I gave myself the gift of officially opening my private practice. Strategically, I chose to remain close to the communities where I was already serving clients, which resulted in opening one office in West Orlando and another in East Orlando. I was finally living my dream—practicing the way I wanted, making all the decisions, and supporting clients in need, even when they were unable to pay. I am able to take full control of my schedule, practice the self-care I teach my clients, and maintain balance. Each week brings new lessons in running my practice, especially now that we have added a new intern as a provider at Unwritten Story.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, I don’t think anyone starting a business has a smooth road. I was open to learning, knowing I needed to give myself a learning curve. I understood there would be challenges—and there were. From understanding taxes and required licenses to navigating software, leases, and landlords, I faced a range of obstacles that had to be addressed.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love that Orlando is such a diverse city, a true melting pot of cultures. I travel often, and when people find out I’m from Orlando, they immediately think of Mickey Mouse—but there’s so much more to the city than its theme parks. I enjoy exploring the city’s cultural richness and unique experiences. As a foodie, I especially love Orlando’s ever-evolving food scene. The one thing I like least about the city is the traffic.
