Today we’d like to introduce you to Shirley Coronado
Hi Shirley, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
From a Dreamer to a Doer: My Journey as an Immigrant Entrepreneur**
When I arrived in the United States from Colombia, I carried a suitcase full of dreams. Like many immigrants, my journey was far from easy, but it was fueled by determination and a deep desire to succeed.
The first step was learning English, a task that was both challenging and rewarding. Slowly but surely, I became fluent and began pursuing my education. My passion for helping others led me to the field of speech and language pathology, where I could bridge communication gaps and make a real difference. After years of dedication, I graduated with a master’s degree and achieved what once seemed impossible.
But I wasn’t done dreaming. With a vision in mind and the courage to take the leap, I opened my own speech and language therapy practice. I started small, growing my business step by step, but each milestone brought me closer to my ultimate goal: supporting my Hispanic community.
I know the struggles many immigrants face firsthand, which is why my practice is more than just a business—it’s a resource. I strive to provide the tools and knowledge my clients need to overcome barriers and thrive. It’s my way of giving back to a community that has supported me on my journey.
One day, I dreamed of owning a business. Today, that dream is a reality. My story is proof that with perseverance and purpose, we can turn even the biggest dreams into something tangible. And while I’m proud of how far I’ve come, I’m even more excited for what’s ahead—a future where I can continue to empower others to reach their potential.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Succeeding in a country that wasn’t my own was both challenging and, at times, felt hopeless. But despite the struggles, I’m deeply grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given and the resilience I’ve built along the way.
One of the first and greatest hurdles was learning English. It wasn’t just about understanding a new language—it was about navigating an entirely different culture. And yet, despite the difficulties, I chose a career centered on communication. It might sound crazy to some, but for me, it was the ultimate challenge: to master a new language and use it to help others overcome their own barriers to communication..
Even after completing my education, the challenges didn’t end. Starting my own business as an immigrant entrepreneur brought new obstacles—learning about business regulations, gaining clients, and building a foundation step by step. It wasn’t easy, but every small victory was a testament to the power of perseverance.
