Today we’d like to introduce you to Tony Ingram.
Hi Tony, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
The idea of entrepreneurship all started when I was a kid growing up in Harlem, NY. I saw and helped my father sell items such as t-shirts and tapes etc. I had other family members that owned stores, clubs, did women’s hair and owned farms(in North Carolina). So I guess it’s in my DNA. I was born in Manhattan, NY then I moved to North Carolina at the age of 13. I played multiple sports in high school and when I graduated high school, I attended Chowan University to play football. I obtained my Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration then joined the Air Force Reserve for eight years while teaching in North Carolina.
Upon relocating to Florida in 2005, I continued teaching Business classes in the high school level, taught in Elementary schools and completed my Master’s in Education in 2008. During this time, the vision of entrepreneurship was burning inside of me but I didn’t take the leap.
By 2019 I stopped teaching and with the encouragement and support of my wife Melanie, I turned my vision into a reality. A1 Tax and Notary Services was formed with the intent in mind to first educate and provide services that aren’t readily available in the community.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road to say the least. Especially starting a business during a pandemic. I believe struggles are a part of business. It teaches you to appreciate the success when it comes. Although things aren’t smooth, it helps you create policies and procedures that naturally might not occur. I’m very detailed so when a bump does occur, I look at it as a lesson not a loss.
The pandemic hurt a lot of small businesses that require face-to -face interactions. We were blessed to have phone calls, zoom calls or have meetings in a small-group setting to accomplish what we needed to do.
