Today we’d like to introduce you to Tonya Kipe
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
After teaching in the public school system for 11 years, I became increasingly frustrated with how students were being left behind and how little autonomy teachers had to use the methods and resources best suited for their students. The rigid district timelines, mandated curriculum, lack of time for social-emotional needs, and robotic pacing—where every teacher in the same grade had to follow the exact same schedule—left little room for true learning.
In February 2022, I started planning Kipe Academy, and by June 2023, I officially left public education to focus on my vision full-time. Kipe Academy launched with one student in January 2024 and grew to serve 26 students by the end of the year.
As a mother of two sons—one who was homeschooled through high school and one who graduated from public school—I’ve seen firsthand the impact of different learning environments. My oldest son experienced a lot of wasted instructional time in school, often finishing his work quickly and then being left with nothing meaningful to do. My youngest struggled to get the accommodations outlined in his IEP, which led to frustration, behavior challenges, and stress that carried over at home. When we decided to homeschool him for high school, the difference was life-changing. That experience reinforced my belief that families deserve learning options that truly meet their children’s needs.
At Kipe Academy, we meet students where they are. While they may have a grade level on paper, we tailor lessons to their actual skill level, ensuring they grow at their own pace. We also give students a say in what they learn, building units of study around their interests. So far, our data shows strong student progress, and our families are thrilled that their children actually want to come to school.
Beyond Kipe Academy, I am passionate about helping other educators create and grow microschools. I have partnered with the National Microschooling Center as an Ecosystem Builder to support microschool leaders in my county and state, helping them network and build a strong support system. My goal is to empower more educators to take control of their teaching and provide families with high-quality, personalized learning experiences.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We faced many challenges along the way. Finding a space that met the requirements while staying within our budget was one of the biggest hurdles and took the longest time to resolve. I also had to navigate the nonprofit world, develop business skills, and learn how to market our school effectively. These were exciting and necessary lessons, but they required a significant investment of time. Another challenge we encountered early on was delays in payments from the state scholarship program. Fortunately, the system has improved, and payments are now coming in more reliably.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Kipe Academy is a nonprofit microschool dedicated to providing personalized, student-centered learning. We specialize in meeting students where they are academically, rather than forcing them into a one-size-fits-all curriculum. Our approach allows students to progress at their own pace while incorporating their interests into engaging, hands-on learning experiences.
What sets us apart is our flexibility and commitment to truly individualized education. We integrate project-based learning, thematic units, and real-world experiences to make learning meaningful and enjoyable. Students have a grade level on paper, but we focus on their actual skill levels, ensuring they get the support they need to grow. We also emphasize a strong sense of community, where students feel safe, valued, and excited to come to school each day.
One of the things I’m most proud of is how quickly Kipe Academy has grown and the impact we’re making on students and families. We started with just one student in January 2024, and by the end of the year, we had 26 students who were thriving. Families often tell us how relieved they are to finally have an option that works for their child—where learning feels engaging, social, and personalized.
Beyond our school, I’m also passionate about helping other educators create and grow microschools. Through my role as an Ecosystem Builder with the National Microschooling Center, I support local microschool leaders by helping them network and access the resources they need to succeed.
For families looking for a better educational fit or educators seeking an environment where they can truly make a difference, Kipe Academy and the microschooling movement offer exciting opportunities. We’re here to provide an education that works for each child, not just the system.
How do you define success?
Success isn’t just about money—it’s about fulfillment. It’s the happiness that comes from doing meaningful work, the progress you see in yourself and others, and the positive impact you make. Success is knowing that your life has changed for the better because you were willing to put in the work to grow, evolve, and create something meaningful.
