Inspiring Conversations with Velton Ivory of True Capital Tax and Accounting Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Velton Ivory.

Hi Velton, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Growing up in the inner city of Miami, FL there are not many opportunities afforded to us beyond poverty and gang violence besides sports and entertainment. It’s extremely difficult to choose any career outside of the criminal activity we are pressured into daily. Fortunately, upon my high school graduation my guidance counselor sparked an interest of accounting in me based on my math and critical thinking skills. After experiencing the hardship of growing up in a ruthless area and the slaying of my oldest brother I knew academics would be the only to change what was initially destined for me. I further developed through my studies at Miami-Dade Community College where I graduated honors with an Associate’s degree in accounting and later transferred to the University of Central Florida (UCF) to continue my education. During my time at UCF, I joined the following organizations and held several high-ranking positions such as Chapter President: Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc, Alpha Kappa Psi, Inc, the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA), and participated in Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program as a tax preparer. Through hard work and determination, I founded True Capital Tax and Accounting Services, LLC (True Capital), a company I established in March of 2016 with a focus on providing high-quality and affordable tax preparation services to everyday people. In addition to providing tax preparation services, we work with small businesses to help find solutions to their accounting/bookkeeping needs. True Capital is dedicated to bringing integrity and problem-solving back into the tax and accounting industry. We achieve this through our commitment to our clients by providing top-quality service. We provide flexible and convenient service options, including the ability to meet with clients in person, virtually, or using our secure document checklist software. In addition to our core values of integrity, experience, and commitment, True Capital is known for our straightforward, intuitive, and trustworthy approach. We strive to make our clients’ experiences as easy and stress-free as possible while providing honest and reliable solutions to our clients.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting and running a business is never an easy task and I have certainly faced my fair share of challenges along the way. One of the biggest obstacles I have encountered is the difficulty of standing out in a crowded and competitive market. The barriers of entering the tax preparation industry are low which means there are new practices opening every season. To differentiate True Capital from other tax and accounting firms, I have strived to build a strong reputation for honesty, reliability, and high-quality service. Another challenge that I had to overcome wad the time and effort it takes to build a successful business from the ground up. This requires a lot of hard work, dedication, and long hours, which can be demanding and exhausting.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Finding a mentor can be a valuable experience for any reason including entrepreneurship, professional, or personal. I personally have found great success through the guidance of mentors in my career. One way I have found mentors is by seeking out individuals who have similar experience and expertise in the areas I want to specialize in such as other accountants and business owners. I have also found mentors through networking events, professional associations such as the organizations I am a member of, and through personal connections such as my friends. My advice for finding a mentor or networking, in general, is to be proactive and open to new opportunities. This can involve reaching out to individuals who you admire or respect in your industry, attending events or workshops, or joining professional associations or groups. The main important tip is to be sincere and authentic in your interactions and to be willing to listen and learn from those who have more experience.
