Today we’d like to introduce you to Yiset Perez.
Hi Yiset, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Currently, I am a clinical social worker in my own private practice called Building Resiliency, LLC. I have been in the field for about 9 years with a background in community mental health, the homelessness population, college mental health, psychiatric hospital settings, and college-level teaching. My current practice focuses on the integration of my training and values. I consider myself a social advocate from my social work background and it continues to inform the populations I serve and/or represent myself. I work with the Latinx communities, the LGBTQIA+ communities, and particularly the Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming communities. On a personal level, coming to the U.S at the age of 13 from Cuba and going through the acculturation process I continue to utilize my experience to aid my clients through their own acculturation and life transitional experiences. I strongly hold the values of practicing with equality and equity and offering the best care and support for the populations I advocate for and the clientele I work with.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been an exact smooth road, although I also give credit to my parents and their ongoing support with my career path and endeavors. I could speak on the challenges of navigating a new country at the age of 13 without any language proficiency in English, going through college as a first-generation in the U.S, and continuing to advocate for underrepresented populations.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My mission statement for my practice includes how we work with you (the client) to bring balance and direction to your life. We hope to offer a safe and collaborative therapeutic space for your life journey to emotional resilience. My major specialties include working with chronic mental health and personality disorders. Other unique specialties include bilingual services in Spanish/English, and working with special populations including the Latinx, LGBTQIA+ communities, and Gender-related concerns. I emphasize working with an authentic and caring approach. And I integrate the values of intersectionality in diversity and your therapeutic experience.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I could say I have learned to be more comfortable with risk-taking. Previously, I worked in college mental health for 5+ years and it felt at the time as my dream job. However, I felt that I needed to branch out on my own in order to offer more comprehensive services and being able to meet my clients’ needs fully. I decided to leave it behind and venture on my own as a small-business owner, and sole person in my practice at the time to not just learn more clinically but also all business aspects.
