We recently had the chance to connect with Kayla Waller and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kayla, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
My full-time job is Technical Entertainment Maintenance at Universal Studios Orlando, so doing my YouTube videos is one thing I enjoy outside of work. Yes, filming videos can be stressful, but I love to get to travel around Florida. I love to show people there is more to Florida than the Theme Parks.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Kayla Waller and I am a YouTube Content Creator. I was born and raised in Eastern North Carolina and I now currently live in Central Florida. I graduated from Carteret Community College with my degree in Associates in Fine Arts and I also graduated from UNCW with a BA in Theatre Design and Technologies. My full-time job is a tech in Technical Entertainment Maintenance at Universal Studios Orlando, but making videos for YouTube is my part-time job. My YouTube channel consists of videos that pertain to camping, fishing, hunting, cooking, gardening, magnet fishing and other outdoor activities. My channel is based around my hobbies and I love sharing my knowledge and learning more about my passions. I also like showing there is more to Florida than the theme parks and there is so much history around Florida. I do film back in my hometown areas in Eastern North Carolina a bit as well. I am just a Southern girl who loves learning and sharing all my experiences and knowledge with the world!
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
Before my YouTube channel, I would post short updates on my personal Facebook page. With my family being in NC and I being in Florida, they would always ask me the same questions. Everyone would ask me about my garden, cooking and the weather if there was a hurricane traveling up the coastline. So I would make short updates on my page for family and friends to see. It wasn’t til my friend Amy Stephens, aka Oven Mom, told me my videos are funny. So I posted some on YouTube til I could make a real video. So I give the credit to Amy of seeing the potential I had for YouTube.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Growing up I was always a shy kid. I was basically in my own shell and kept to myself. Once I was in college, I decided to take Acting to help get me out of my shell and it helped me tremendously. From there I kept growing out of my shell and open up to the world. Everyone who knows me was shocked I was making a YouTube video because people remember me by shy. It has taken me some getting used to with being more open on YouTube and show my life to people across the globe. The videos that have been the best are the ones I can relax and be me. So being shy and not open would be a fear that has held me back in my childhood, but I have over come it in time.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes. I try to show the real me in my videos. Sometimes I have to tone it back a bit, but I do try and show my true self to the public. When Iam relaxed and confident that’s when I get the best videos for my channel and people get to witness the real me.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
Most people don’t understand that making YouTube videos is a lot of work. It is very time consuming and very stressful. YouTube is like the library where instead of traveling to the library to look up information you can just type in the search bar and find the information in a second. But the key is what is the flavor of the week of what people are looking for. For example one week my fishing videos will be popular so I’ll make sure to make fishing videos. Then all of a sudden my camping videos will be popular and those are very time consuming to make. I have learned to make my videos with the season. Fishing for the summer, camping in the spring and fall for Florida due to heat, etc. When other YouTubers post a video or a post saying I had to step away for a bit, I haven’t posted in awhile due to xyz, personal issues get got in the way. I deeply understand that because it’s not just recording and throwing a video on YouTube. There is a lot of time that people put into their videos and it can be stressful.
