Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with DESMOND BROWN of Winter Park

DESMOND BROWN shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi DESMOND, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
I’m a full-time master’s student at Full Sail University, pursuing my degree in Film and Production. When I’m not immersed in coursework, I’m capturing unforgettable moments as a wedding photographer or taking on creative freelance projects that allow me to tell compelling visual stories.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m currently pursuing my master’s degree in film as a full-time student at Full Sail University, where I also earned my bachelor’s this past February. Outside of my studies, I spend most of my free time shooting personal projects and working as a wedding photographer for a photography company.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I used to be a carefree soul, always dancing, laughing, playing, and moving through life with a light heart, doing whatever felt right in the moment. Back then, dance wasn’t just a hobby; it was my sanctuary, my escape from reality. It gave me a sense of freedom and purpose, a way to express what I couldn’t put into words. For a long time, I believed dance was my way out, my path to something greater.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me the true meaning of resilience. It revealed what I was really made of and showed me that giving up was never an option. In the toughest moments, I learned to grit my teeth, stand tall, and keep pushing forward. Through every hardship, I discovered that my strength ran deeper than I ever imagined, and most importantly, that I deserve to be here, no matter what life throws my way.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
The public version is the real me now. I had to learn to stop “faking it to make it,” because that only left me feeling fake and miserable. I was happiest when I was simply myself. So, I took off the mask, showed up as me, and started living for me. If I was accepted somewhere, great. If not, then that place wasn’t for me anyway.
The truth is, people will judge you no matter what you do. Once you realize that, you stop caring about their opinions and start focusing on what makes you happy. I can’t control people, but I can control how I respond to them, and how I choose to live.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I lived my life to the fullest. I hope people remember me as happy and carefree, as someone who followed their heart without apology. I did what I wanted to do, chased what lit my soul on fire, and carved out my own path, my way, not anyone else’s.
