We recently had the chance to connect with Maya Jones and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning Maya, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Integrity, for sure. It’s easy to be a smart a**hole. And being able to hang for hours and hours doesn’t necessarily mean people enjoy your company. But if you’re a solid person and have good integrity, I believe it will take you far.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Maya, I do lighting and steelwork/carpentry for live events, tours, concerts, etc. Outside of that, I own and operate a production company based in Florida where I set up small (for now) lighting rigs and create set designs for local creatives and businesses.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
Hm, maybe my parents I guess. They were both soldiers in the Army, so I was brought up on hard work. But through finding my own path… it’s people that I meet every day on the job that teach me alot about resilience and giving it your all. My military background allowed me to really be open to this line of work and be able to keep up with the pace.
When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
I think – right now, honestly, There has been so much pain in my life in the last couple years and learning how to use that pain to continue moving forward instead of letting it slow me down is what is really, really pushing me in the current chapter of my life.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
That emotions have no place in logic. Its a delicate dance that I believe people should consider and be more open to.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
I absolutely love my job(s). They bring me incredible amounts of joy. I love being a part of something bigger than I am, I love creating experiences and making people happy. I like being apart of the escape from the sadness and destruction of the world. I like to think the work I do gives people that. Some days are harder than others, but whether i am on a tour or a gig for the day, I don’t feel like I “have a job” it always feels like something that I just get to do. My career is my favorite thing about my life.
