Life & Work with Rob A. Lott

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rob A. Lott.

Rob, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up in Ohio. I knew I always wanted to be in show business in some way, shape, or form. So, I pursued the performing arts at every turn. I am very thankful to have had supportive parents who encouraged my love for performing. They gave me opportunities at our church and cheered me on at all my school performances.

I was all set and ready to go to The Ohio State University to study music. However, over the summer after my senior year, a friend recommended me to audition for a role as a puppeteer at Walt DisneyWorld. I went to the audition, and the rest, as they say, is history.

I began working at Walt Disney World as a puppeteer in 2000. I soon got a gig at SeaWorld doing a preshow for their Sea Lion show. I was also getting together with three other guys to sing barbershop, do-wop, and rockapella type harmonies. I was given an opportunity to head to Tokyo DisneySea with these guys for a year to perform as The Dockside Porters, a barbershop quartet.

When I got back to Orlando, I was asked to begin teaching up-and-coming puppeteers in the shows I used to perform. (This began my love and pursuit of leadership and creativity.) I did this for a number of years and began to step in for performers who were missing from rehearsal. This caught the eye of Disney Casting and Show Directors. Soon I was asked to audition and perform full time in Disney Shows. I performed in Disney and SeaWorld shows for many years, meanwhile beginning to take on leadership roles to direct, write, and create shows all around Central Florida and beyond.

When COVID hit, this was an opportunity to take all I had learned from my two decades of performing, leading, and creating. Blue Trumpet Creative, a coaching, consulting, and creative development company, was born.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’m an optimistic, glass is half-full, kind of guy. I tend to view obstacles and struggles as learning and growth opportunities. So, was it a smooth road? No. Bumpy and winding? Yes. But I’ve enjoyed it all along the way. Truly.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am the Owner and Lead Creative of Blue Trumpet Creative. We specialize in Coaching, Consulting, and Creative Development. We take the principles of theatre and live performance and apply them to the corporate, business, and non-profit world. Blue Trumpet Creative, most recently, has become known for its coaching utilizing the principles of a great audition to help individuals knock their job interview out of the park.

We are providing creative consultation to accounting firms, realty companies, timeshare organizations, non-profit arts organizations, as well as churches and individual leaders. We’ve become known in the YouTube and podcasting space for our creative development. Providing polish and content for various organizations and individuals to get their story out into the world. We are most proud of the variety of content we have been able to advise, create, and direct. What sets us apart, again, is our experience in the live performance and theatrical world, and bringing that expertise and applying it to the problem solving and storytelling of organizations you might not expect it from.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Say “Yes” to everything for the first five years. This will get you the experience to know what you love, what you’re great at, as well as what you don’t enjoy, and where your weaknesses are.

Then you’ll be well equipped to move forward for the next five years and beyond, with the experience and expertise in all the areas you love and are great at.
