Life & Work with Tim Pappas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tim Pappas.

Hi Tim, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born in South Florida, and my parents moved to Orlando when I was in elementary school, so I have been here most of my life. Since I was a child, I was musical. I’m self-taught on the piano and I played the cello all through school. High school was when I first started performing onstage. Though it was something I was always interested in, I didn’t pursue it until then. I started working at Disney when I was 16 years old, hoping to one day work as a performer. I worked at The Great Movie Ride, Guest Relations, and facilitated the Traditions program. Audition after audition, and several callbacks, and I never landed a role. I began music directing some productions with S.T.A.G.E (a Cast Member lead theater group) and the first two in-house musicals at The Garden Theater in Winter Garden, singing with the Encore! Cast Choir, performing in a few productions at the Orlando Repertory Theater, and narrating concerts with the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra. Soon after, I was called in to audition for a new show at Magic Kingdom, which I knew nothing about. Ultimately, I would spend seven years with The Royal Majesty Makers making magic in Fantasyland. During this time, I got married to my other half, Candace, and had our first child! After the Majesty Makers rode into the proverbial “sunset” it was time to figure out what to do next. Amazingly, I received a call from the Operations Manager at the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra asking me if I was interested in a job that I didn’t know existed – Orchestra Personnel Manager! Here I am, two years later, leading hundreds of musicians through a global pandemic! Funny how things work out. I’m very thankful for the opportunity to continue to support my family while bridging my love of live performance and music with my administrative background.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Certainly not. I am thankful for all of the bumps though. Something you don’t realize it until after the fact. Our child was born with a rare, but treatable condition called Hirschsprung’s Disease. It meant that he had to have major surgery on his digestive system only 15 days after he was born. This was something we couldn’t have anticipated. Thanks to the experts at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, our little one is happy, healthy, and so bright! During his recovery, I had to return to work, putting smiles on the faces of children while missing my own. Those might have been the hardest days to put on the show. Though there was a therapeutic element to performing, it was bittersweet at times and I needed to step away to catch my breath.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
For the past six years, I’ve been doing professional voiceover work from my home studio. I have provided voices for smartphone apps, e-learning modules, radio advertisements, and other types of digital media. In town, I’ve voiced preshow announcements at both Bob Carr Theater and Exploria Stadium. I’m very proud of this because I have been able to find a creative outlet which I can do from home. I have been able to hone my editing skills, technique, and business acumen by working all aspects on my own! It’s very fulfilling to finish a job. I’m hoping that one day, this will be my career!

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I think the voiceover world is already in a massive state of flux. Technology has only made it easier for anyone with the desire to begin recording voiceover work from home. I think it can only improve from here. Traditionally, live narration is done at a venue, but I can imagine people will be able to announce live events from home one day!
