Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexus Smiley.

Hi Alexus, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I became a luxury picnic owner, due to the pandemic! I have always loved the luxuries of fine dining and enjoyed being outdoors but unfortunately, due to the pandemic, the fine dining was put on pause, and outdoors is where my now husband and I spent most of our time. I would cook dinner at home and set up a floor table, blankets, and a few pillows for our comfort and convenience at our pool or even sometimes at the park. I became more indulged in wine glasses, the cutlery, and the plating for our dinners. I ended up setting up a picnic for valentines day at the park and people were coming up to me asking what it was I was doing and I explained it as being “Not just an ordinary picnic, but a luxury picnic” With that, I had my first booking February 2021, without a website, no LLC, not even a real name for my business, just doing something I enjoyed. A few weeks went by and I created a website with some of my work, purchased an LLC, and Poetic Picnic was created.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
With being an owner of any business there will be struggles along the way, but my luxury picnic business was just starting. I had no experience being a business owner, so many of my obstacles were faced by learning about what being a business owner was all about, most importantly it was trying to figure out who my audience truly was. Who was I targeting? Who would this type of business benefit? With being able to answer those questions thoroughly and confidently I was prepared to take my business seriously and learn everything I could!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I love being able to share my work and what I do, I specialize in picnics, but this is no ordinary picnic, I supply my clients with an experience by bringing luxury outdoors. Poetic Picnic is a luxury picnic that is known for having an eye for detail, style, and elegance. I am most proud of being able to create these experiences for my clients that last a lifetime, these qualities are what set me apart from others.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice for new picnic owners is to stay true to yourself, continue to be creative, and think outside the box! This business can be so much fun, so have fun with it!
