Life & Work with Ali Kavousi of Athens, Dubai, Miami

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ali Kavousi.

Ali Kavousi

Hi Ali, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I embarked on my entrepreneurial journey with a mix of passion for the hospitality industry and a vision for technology’s transformative power. Initially, I began in a modest setting, focusing on understanding the intricate needs of restaurants and their daily challenges. My drive stemmed from a simple but powerful desire to enhance the way hospitality businesses operate and interact with their customers.

In 2018, I founded TheList, a tech platform designed to revolutionize customer relationship management in the hospitality sector. TheList started as a small project but quickly evolved, thanks to our commitment to addressing real-world issues with innovative solutions. We developed a comprehensive suite of tools that includes online reservations, guest management, and a dynamic CRM system, tailored specifically for restaurants, cafes, beach bars and nightlife.

Our journey wasn’t without its challenges. Navigating the competitive tech landscape required not just innovative ideas but resilience and a clear understanding of our market. We initially focused on local markets in Greece, gradually expanding to include the UAE, Hungary, and most recently, Miami, Florida. Each step forward was fueled by a commitment to quality, user-friendly solutions, and proactive customer service.

Today, TheList is recognized not just for our technological solutions but for our role in empowering restaurants to enhance their customer experiences and operational efficiency. Our success is measured by our clients’ success, which drives us to continuously innovate and expand our reach.

Looking ahead, I am excited about the opportunities to further explore and merge technology with hospitality to create even more impactful experiences. As we grow, our mission remains the same: to provide tools that enable restaurants and nightclubs worldwide to thrive in an increasingly digital world.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The path of entrepreneurship is rarely a smooth one, and my experience has been no exception. The journey of building TheList from the ground up, especially as a solo founder without a technical background, has been both challenging and exhilarating.

One of the most significant hurdles was the initial phase of development. Navigating the complexities of software development, particularly without a technical co-founder, meant relying heavily on outsourced teams which often led to inconsistencies and delays. This not only affected the pace of our growth but also taught me crucial lessons about team management and the importance of having a reliable and skilled team.

Bootstrapping added another layer of complexity. Starting out in Greece, where the startup ecosystem is not as robust as places like Silicon Valley, meant that securing investment was a tremendous challenge. Unlike in the U.S., where sometimes a mere idea can attract significant funding, in Southern Europe, and particularly in Greece, convincing stakeholders of the potential of a tech-based idea requires much more than vision—it requires proven metrics and substantial traction.

Furthermore, educating the market was another major task. Introducing advanced tech solutions to an industry that is traditionally not the first to adapt to digital change meant spending considerable time demonstrating the value and efficiency our platform could bring to everyday operations.

The regulatory and economic environment in Greece also posed significant barriers. The bureaucratic hurdles can be daunting; it often feels like the system is designed more to stifle than to foster young startups. This environment demands a level of resilience and adaptability that can be quite taxing, even for the most determined entrepreneur.

Despite these challenges, entrepreneurship is fundamentally about overcoming obstacles. Each problem presents a new learning opportunity and a chance to improve both professionally and personally. There are countless other challenges one could discuss—each one has shaped the journey in meaningful ways, making TheList not just a business, but a testament to the entrepreneurial spirit.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At TheList, I’ve worn every hat imaginable—from managing development and overseeing HR to spearheading marketing efforts. As the founder, my role spans the entire spectrum of our operations, ensuring that every facet of the business aligns with our mission and strategic goals.

Specialization and Leadership: My primary focus is on leadership, particularly in guiding our team through the complexities of the industry and the various challenges we face. I specialize in fostering resilience and driving momentum, ensuring that our team remains motivated and forward-thinking, even in the most demanding times.

Reputation: I am known for being more of a motivational leader than a traditional boss. My approach is hands-on and inclusive, prioritizing communication and inspiration over top-down directives. This leadership style has helped cultivate a workplace where innovation thrives and team members feel genuinely valued.

Pride in Achievements: What I am most proud of is the recognition TheList has garnered within the hospitality industry. We’ve built a distinguished brand, forming partnerships with over 1,500 high-end restaurants across four countries. Our growth, especially through the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, stands as a testament to the resilience and dedication of our team.

Differentiation: What sets us apart is our commitment to solving the real pain points of the hospitality industry. Unlike many competitors who may simply mimic existing platforms to capture market share, we delve deep into understanding the specific needs and challenges of our clients. Our solutions are designed not just to fit but to shape the market, offering innovative features that directly address the needs of restaurant owners and patrons alike.

How do you think about luck?
In my journey both personally and as the founder of TheList, I’ve come to view luck not as a random benefactor but as a byproduct of our choices and actions. I don’t rely on good or bad luck to explain our circumstances or the outcomes of our efforts. In my view, attributing too much to luck can sometimes be a way for people to deflect responsibility for their decisions or the outcome of their efforts.

Instead, I believe in preparation, hard work, and making informed decisions. Each step we take opens new doors and opportunities, which some might perceive as ‘good luck,’ but in reality, these are often opportunities we’ve created through persistence and perseverance. Similarly, setbacks often attributed to ‘bad luck’ can usually be traced back to specific decisions and actions, providing valuable lessons that contribute to our growth and improvement.

By focusing on factors within our control and learning from every outcome, we navigate our path more effectively and continually move toward our goals, regardless of the so-called ‘luck’ we encounter along the way.
