Life & Work with Camila Mojica

Today we’d like to introduce you to Camila Mojica.

Camila, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Creativity has always been an instinct for me. Around the age of twelve, I decided to give photography a shot when one afternoon I watched my aunt take photos for one of her photography workshops. It was all fascinating to me, the freedom that the camera offers you to bring to life exactly what you envision in your mind. It started as a hobby I looked forward to whenever my mom would drop me off at my aunt’s house for the day, and eventually, at the age of fifteen, I realized it had become so much more than that. I begged my parents for a beginner camera set up for my birthday around the age of fifteen. After believing in my potential, my aunt eventually hired me as a part of her wedding photography team. For the years after, we traveled to Miami and Puerto Rico for various destination weddings. Between weddings, I apprenticed under a multimedia producer who was also an apprentice for my aunt when he first started photography. We photographed and videotaped events and gigs like Spooky Empire. Reflecting on my past, I certainly would not be the photographer I am today without my aunt, my family, and all the support I’ve been blessed to have.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road hasn’t always been smooth for me. Like anybody, quarantine got the best of me. In the wake of social distancing, home mandates, and closed public spaces, I had practically quit photography. It was impossible for me to believe things were going to go back to normal so things like photo shoots would be possible again. I was completely bogged down by the pandemic, but as restrictions started to lift once again, I forced myself to get back out there and push my creative limits.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a portrait photographer who specializes in creative shoots. During my photoshoots, I utilize the location around me to manipulate the photos. While I do enjoy the creativity within photoshop, I love incorporating elements that I physically have around me. This allows the natural effects within my photos to appear whimsical and raw. I am known for my bright, edgy, and artistic portraits, which is something I am extremely passionate about. I believe what sets me apart is my ability to make any place feel photogenic. I have an eye for locations that may seem boring or simple and I truly enjoy revealing the potential for what can come from them.
