Today we’d like to introduce you to Chepe Jose.
Hi Chepe, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
While I was a manager in a retail store, I was part of the companies social media launch team. I started taking photos of product with storytelling. From there, I started to reignite my love for photography and production, which lead into the community reaching out for photography services. Two years ago, I got my first gig with some elite celebrities and I loved it. My big break was going on tour with Latin celebrity Julian Gil who opened some of the biggest doors in the Latin industry for me. For that, I am eternally grateful. He opened the doors; however I did the rest.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was not been a smooth road. I had to readjust my lifestyle. When you are freelance, you can come across a big check and not see another one for several weeks. You are the CEO, Manager, Accountant, Artist, among a lot of other hats. Most of the time, there is no reference point or anyone to bounce ideas off when it comes to my work. It stretched me for sure. I have also come across my fair share of people who just want to take from me or who don’t value photographers and their work. Also, people who want to work with you but do not want to see you win, once she see your potential, they may blacklist you or cut you off. That is totally okay; they do me a favor when they do that. I am a firm believer that there is enough work out here for every creative and I am fortunate to have maintained some healthy friendships with other photographers in this industry, which is not always easy. It’s easier for me now to smell bad intentions. Good vibes only welcomed.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a celebrity photographer. I photograph some of your favorite celebrities. I specialize in candid shots, behind-the-scenes photos and portraits. I’m known for the candid photography, I have been hired many times to galas and events with the task of just capture the moments. I’m most proud of a photo I took of my celebrity crush Thalia that I only have 60 seconds to take. What sets me apart from others is the passion and energy I bring on set and my ability to make my clients feel comfortable in front of my camera, no matter if it’s an A list celebrity or my next-door neighbor.
What does success mean to you?
For me personally, I define success by character. When I look back at my journey, I want to see a pattern of my character being strengthened and making positive impacts in the lives of those I have encountered. Everything else is extra.
