Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Colon.
Hi Chris, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
So, I’m originally from Brooklyn, New York. That’s where I found my love for music, I wasn’t really the kid that went outside much, Nah I had more fun staying home watching anime, playing video games or writing remixes to songs I knew. I would memorize songs so fast that by the second or third time I heard it, I was able to sing along with most lyrics. When I was 12, my mom moved us down to Orlando, It was a big change in scenery for sure, but I still kept to my passions, I made a few friends while I went to school and we’d usually hang out after class and freestyle to some beats on Youtube. In all honesty, I was the worst out of the group. It was still always fun. Fast forward to High School, I was really into basketball, I think almost every dude wanted to be in the NBA at one point in their life (I thought I could make the NBA and never even made the school team, you can see how “Ambitious” I can be) I didn’t do anything music-related until senior year, my friend Kevin and I wanted to do something fun before we graduated so we signed up to rap at a black history performance that the school was holding, we rapped about some of the current events at the time that people were aware of but weren’t talking about.
I remember auditioning and being so nervous that I wouldn’t make the cut, but everyone ended up loving the bars. What can I say, I’m a natural. All jokes aside, performing and seeing the audience react (Especially the ladies after the performance) made me realize this passion that I’ve had all along. After graduation, I took a small break from school, I worked at Universal, where I met an amazing amount of fellow creatives. I met my close friend “JuxJu” there, we ended up being roommates for some time, we both wanted to start making music, so we turned our shed into a makeshift studio, but since none of us were proficient at Mixing, we never really released much since we didn’t like how things sounded. I decided then might be the best time to go back to school. I went to this school called F.I.R.S.T, but the pandemic hit three months into my school year, everything else was a blur. After things settled down a bit, I was looking for somewhere to get my Internship hours at when I stumbled across Uncharted. Everything must happen for a reason. On my first week of Interning, I told Elijah that I was an artist and I wanted to make music with the company, right then and there we recorded my song “It’s Over”, I really liked how everything sounded and the way that we were able to make my vision for the song come together, so I wanted to learn more, but more than that, I wanted to be a part of the team. Fast forward to today and here we are!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all, but if It were, I wouldn’t be who I am today. I’ve grown from experiences that I’ve had. Most people go into music just to try and make some money. It’s not that simple, you have to put in the work to get anything in the first place. With everyone and their mothers rapping nowadays, you need to be different. First, you need to have a good sound, Can’t make money off of your music if you sound like trash (Thinking about our generation of Rappers, I might have to take that back). Then you need to Promote yourself, Can’t make money off of your music if no one’s hearing it, and if you don’t have one by this point, You’re gunna need a team, even Independent artists aren’t as independent as you’d think.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an Artist / Creative, I love rapping, singing (not really good at this one), and acting and I’m actually working on a short film (Shhhhh). I’m known for having playful and relatable lyrics and honestly, I’m very proud in my talents. The thing that sets me apart from everyone is that I’m just like everyone. I don’t care for a Persona or anything, I go thru heartbreaks, I laugh, and I make mistakes just like everyone else. I want people to relate to my music.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My mom, for not kicking me out when I told her I wanted to be a Rapper instead of joining the army.
Elijah Thomas, he helped me figure out what I wanted to accomplish in music and also helped guide me in finding my sound.
Haddid Bezama, This guy helped me learn more about Film and pushed me to pursue music while I was at my lowest point in life.
JuxJu, he pushed me to write and record my first song and also helped me view and approach music differently.
