Today we’d like to introduce you to Dale Bandy.
Hi Dale, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Dale Bandy – Blues Musician
As a lifelong musician since the age of eight, a multi-instrumentalist whose deep roots in blues, funk, and soul have shaped a vibrant and enduring career. Proficient in violin, saxophone, guitar, organ, and bass, Dale’s versatility and passion have fueled decades of dynamic performance, songwriting, arrangements, and recording.
A founding member of the acclaimed funk outfit Big Shirley, signed to the Kingsnake label, Dale gained early recognition sharing stages with legendary acts like P-Funk, Kool & The Gang, Morris Day and The Time, DAG, and KC and The Sunshine Band. His guitar work has also supported icons such as Spencer Davis and Lester Chambers of The Chambers Brothers.
When not performing his own material, Dale has lent his musical and technical talents to numerous other artists and touring productions—including Donnie & Marie, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Journey, and many more—further showcasing his range and professionalism behind the scenes.
Now based in Orlando, Florida, Dale performs both as a solo artist and with his blues-forward group Dale Bandy and the Blue Cans, performing at music festivals such as Sanford Porchfest with an attendance 30K, as well as local establishments.
His 2018 critically acclaimed full-length album “blue.” and follow-up singles showcase a rich blend of gritty blues, soul, and groove. Currently, he’s in the studio working on his next release—an EP tentatively titled (It’s You That’s) Giving Me The Blues, promising another dose of his authentic, heartfelt sound.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The music business is difficult to navigate. You can never rest. You don’t know when or where the next gig will be.. The rules are always changing. I started out wanting to write and perform music., but ended up with a recording studio,, acting as my own booking and marketing agent, and working for other acts in between. The travel. Traveling has its challenges. I’m not talking about the travel itself, rather the challenge of balancing being gone and maintaining personal relationships, family, and friends.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, recording artist, I do just that. I practice a lot, and I mean a lot. But there are parts of it that aren’t obvious. I spend a lot of time marketing myself. Promoting shows, looking for shows, band rehearsals, recording music, I have a YouTube channel, “Blues Jams” @bluesjams145 that I record backing tracks for musicians to practice along with, so I spend a lot of time with that making the backing tracks and the videos themselves.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I have to say that “luck” is a very big part of anyone’s success. Not to diminish the extraordinary hard work that I and others put in, but plain old dumb luck can make or break you. Being in the right place at the right time, as well as meeting the right people, has afforded me many opportunities I would have otherwise missed. For that, I am grateful.
