Life & Work with David Vidal

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Vidal.

Hi David, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My name is David Vidal. Musically, my artist names are DV Beats and KNG DAVÎD. I produce music under these two artist names and have been doing so for a couple of years now. I was born in Melbourne, Florida, and lived in the panhandle area during my childhood years before moving back down to Brevard County and spending my adolescent and adult years here. I went to UCF from 2012-2016 and lived in the Orlando area during those four years, so you can say that I essentially spent a large portion of my life in the Central Florida area in general!

I first started to produce hip-hop music back in my high school years. I produced for a couple of friends of mine, who recorded hip-hop music at their house while I produced many of their instrumentals. After high school graduation, I went to UCF and got exposed to a wide variety of genres of music, primarily electronic music. From there, I started to incorporate a wide variety of genres of music within my productions. Fast forward to now, where I am still heavily producing original tracks and remixes in many genres that I listened to my youth and my university years. Being half Puerto Rican and half Panamanian, I draw inspiration from the genres of music of both countries and incorporate them into my productions.

During my university years, I also performed as a DJ for various events: weddings, parties, and formal events on and off campus. I plan to engage in DJ’ing again around my local area since many activities have started to resume again after COVID.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Life as a music artist, in general, will always have its obstacles and challenges. Although I am fortunate enough to not have experienced any significant challenges, there have been a few moments where “writer’s block” comes in during the creation of a song that had potential yet cut short of what it could have been upon completion. Dealing with rejection when it comes to offering your services to DJ an event or present your music to others is another example of some challenges that I have faced as well. Finally, accepting the reality that not everyone will be a fan of your work is something that may stray you off your path for a bit, but you must be willing to know that every music artist goes through this as well.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I create music under two different artist names: DV Beats and KNG DAVÎD. I will explain each project separately, the kind of music created under each, and anticipated releases and projects for both.

DV Beats is my initial project and the name I started producing music under back in high school. It stems from my initials, DV, and “Beats,” which is what I was known for creating in high school. I started creating hip-hop beats under this project in high school. Upon exposure to electronic music, while attending UCF, I started to experiment with electronic music, including house music, dubstep, drum & bass, and trap music; after college graduation, I really started to get in touch more with my “roots” and the music I grew up on, which includes salsa, dancehall, reggaeton, bachata, and more. Essentially Latino and Caribbean music. Today, I create music in the dancehall, moombahton, tech house, and baile funk realm. Many of my productions and remixes are influenced by one or more of these genres. I have a couple of original releases on labels, such as “Beat That” on Flex Up Records, “Perc Werk” on Gangsta House Records, and “Risa Mala” on Emulsify. As of now, I have been focusing on the “business” side of music and working on getting new music on more labels, and starting to perform my music out in public.

KNG DAVÎD is my second project that essentially stemmed from the early works of DV Beats. Upon realizing that I create music in such a wide variety of genres, I thought that it would be essential and more practical to create another artist name that hosted my hip-hop, trap, garage, and future bass songs. I thought that the spelling of KNG DAVÎD looked cool, and drew the idea of the name from King David, who was a musician himself. Under this name, I produce songs that fall under the hip-hop, trap, future bass, chill house, chillwave, and chill trap realm, with many songs exhibiting a variety of genres in one. This project features more alternative kinds of music associated with the previously mentioned genres and is newer than the DV Beats name. Nonetheless, I have had some songs featured on Night Swim Radio and other radio shows as well.

I am most proud of my growth as an artist within both of these projects and am excited for what else is to come!

What sets me apart from others is my unique combination of musical influences growing up and my ability to produce in such a vast variety of genres. My potential, musical ear, and undeniable growth and ability to learn are my strong points.

What’s next?
In the future, I plan to continue to create good habits. Good habits of production and life balance in experimenting with new sounds, planning releases, creating content, developing goals, networking professionally, and more. I plan to finally start sharing my content with the world around me on public stages and collaborate with artists within my area and beyond. I am looking forward to the opportunities that will be opening up to me for both projects of mine.
