Life & Work with Delicia Powell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Delicia Powell.

Hi Delicia, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve always had an interest in cosmetics, fashion and luxury self care since I was little. I used to be into nails at first. I swore I was going to be a nail tech by now. But then my parents let me wear makeup when I turned 15 and it was history. That was my sophomore year in high school and I didn’t get “good” at it until my junior year. And that’s when people wanted me to do their makeup too. It took a lot of practice and patience. I was booking clients via direct message on Instagram at the time before I built my website. In 2018, when I left Palm City and moved to Orlando to attend the University of Central Florida, I decided to focus more on school because I majored in Nursing. I was very conflicted because I wasn’t passionate about nursing anymore, but I wanted financial security. I’ve always been scared of struggling the rest of my life and not providing my family with the lifestyle they deserve. My family has supported me so much. Any idea that I have, they will help me bring it to life 100%. When I couldn’t pass the required test to get into the nursing program. I took it as a sign to change my major to Health Services Administration. Still not a passion, but I chose something that wouldn’t keep me in school longer than I wanted to. I had some people close to me saying the “makeup thing” is a hobby and unsustainable and they’re pretty successful people, so I listened. I used 2019 to really network and get my name out there because I wanted to pursue makeup anyway. I did the Miss Omega Psi Phi Pageant, joined the Black Student Union, the National Council of Negro Women, etc. Followers went up a little and I met some amazing people along the way, but progress isn’t linear. I failed a lot and experienced so much disappointment. I was really starting to lose faith in God because it felt like I was going to be stuck sustaining myself with things I didn’t like to do. I graduated from UCF in May 2021 at 20 years old, which is a big accomplishment for me. But then I lost my job in June and had to move back home. Most of my clients are in Orlando, so it was devastating. Then, in November 2021, I started a new job and was able to get a new apartment in Orlando. I made a vision board/plan for myself that I have to follow for 2022. I’m still not happy with the job that I’m at currently. The job is very demanding. It’s hard to wake up everyday and do something you’re not passionate about. I still have faith that God will give me the steady clientele that I need to be able to do makeup and create content full time.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all. My main issue is the fact that I’ve been putting my energy in things that I’m not passionate about to make my dreams come true. It’s a very draining process.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a makeup Artist and Content Creator. I can do makeup for any event that you may have like weddings, pageants, birthdays, photoshoots, etc. I’m very proud of the fact that black women feel so comfortable booking with me because I know how hard it is for black women to find makeup that fits us. On social media most makeup artists use filters, but I don’t and that’s one thing my clients like about me. What you see is what you get, I never add filters.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I do at least one photoshoot every month, so if you’re a model or photographer that needs content, don’t hesitate to reach out. If you have a product that I like, I would love to be a part of any promotional ideas that you have. Supporting me is simple, you can like, follow me, comment, and share my content. You can also book with me and order lipgloss on my website makeupbydelicia.com.
