Today we’d like to introduce you to Don Wallace.
Hi Don, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Designs by Don W officially launched in 2019, but the idea had been brewing inside me for a very long time. I’m Don Wallace, a digital marketing specialist who’s been in the industry since 2014. Before starting my own company, I worked with various design firms across the country. However, I often felt creatively constrained — like I had to fit into someone else’s pattern rather than express my own ideas. My career had reached a point where I saw little growth, and I started to lose the passion that once drove me to build websites. In short, I was tired of pouring my energy into building companies I didn’t own.
It took me years to overcome the fear of starting my own business and stepping away from the security of a traditional job. Eventually, I realized that with my experience and skills, I could make a greater impact by helping small and medium-sized businesses on my own terms.
Today, Designs by Don W focuses on serving small businesses and mom-and-pop shops. After nearly a decade in this industry, I’ve seen the good, the bad, and the ugly — especially how large corporations often overshadow small businesses. I know that these local companies deserve the same strong foundation, professional online presence, and impactful web design that big agencies provide — just without the inflated price tag.
That’s where I come in. As a web designer and digital marketing specialist, I’m dedicated to providing high-quality design and marketing services that empower small and medium-sized businesses to grow — without breaking their budgets.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road at all. There have been several challenges in trying to stay ahead of our competition by staying innovative. In an industry that evolves quickly, keeping up with design trends, new technologies, and shifting customer expectations has required constant reinvention. At times, limited resources made it difficult to invest in the latest tools or marketing strategies needed to reach new audiences.
Another major challenge has been balancing creativity with the realities of running a business — managing production timelines, sourcing quality materials, and maintaining strong relationships with clients while still pushing the creative boundaries that define our brand. There have also been moments when market fluctuations or unexpected project delays tested our resilience and ability to adapt.
Despite these hurdles, each challenge has been an opportunity to learn, grow, and refine what Designs by Don W stands for: quality, originality, and a deep commitment to our craft.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Honestly, I’m proud of a lot. I’m proud that this started as a vision — an idea — and grew into something real that people connect with. I’m proud of the originality of our designs and the way we’ve carved out a distinct style in such a competitive industry.
I’m also proud of the relationships we’ve built with clients. Many of them have been with us from the very beginning, and that loyalty means everything. It tells me we’re doing something right.
Beyond business, I’m proud of the impact we’ve had — inspiring other creatives to believe in their vision, supporting our community, and representing a creative voice that stands for authenticity and passion. Watching a client light up when they see a finished piece — that’s the most rewarding part of it all.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Most people are surprised to learn how hands-on our process still is. Even as the brand has grown, I’m personally involved in every creative decision — from concept sketches to final presentation. Nothing is mass-produced or rushed. Each piece has a story, and that personal touch is something I never want to lose.
