Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Yeh.
Hi Elizabeth, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Just Knots & Knots started during the pandemic, April 2020. Right before the pandemic happened, a family member asked me to make a macrame wall hanging for her. At that time, I’ve only made macrame and weaving for myself and have them display in my home. After I made the piece for her and posted on Instagram, other friends started to ask if I would make some for them as commissions. So pretty soon after, I opened my Etsy shop, started doing markets and events around Orlando area. Along the way, I found my love for making clay earrings as well! It’s a total different medium to create and express my creativity. Since I started doing events and pop-ups, I’ve met so many great small business owners and personally connect with quite a few of them. Recently I’ve started to make more connections with business owners, shops around town to provide workshops and products to more people in the community. Everybody needs art in their lives, either a small macrame keychain, cute clay earrings or a meaningful custom-made macrame wall hanging. It brings me joy to see when a customer comes to me and tell me how happy they are with their purchase. Sometimes, it’s the small things we didn’t know we needed.
I’ve always loved making crafts and fiber art has become my therapy during the lockdown. What is better than doing what you love and make a business out of it? It is always a dream of mine to do something I love for a living, and I am very happy to be making fiber arts today.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
One of the struggles come to mind would be that the fiber art and clay earring community is very popular at the moment, so it is hard to come up with the idea that hasn’t already been done. But I believe there’s room for everyone in the creative space, it just a matter of doing more research and find more inspiration.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I create minimalist style fiber art such as macrame wall hanging, plant hangers, bags and purses. I also make polymer clay earrings with minimalist design as well but I do focus more on fiber art. I am proud of my macrame wall hangings. Every piece is an original design from me. I steer away from copying other artist work, especially when a customer requests a piece to look exactly like someone else’s work.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Trying to make art for a living with three kids is risky. Spending money on high-quality materials and not knowing how it will sell is risky but without risk, there will be no growth or reward.
