Life & Work with Emilee Algarin of Orlando

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emilee Algarin

Hi Emilee, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Emilee Algarin and I’m a 22-year-old local Pop and R&B singer/songwriter. Music has always been a constant in my life. I started singing and playing piano at the age of four. My stepmom noticed that I had an ear for it. We would sit by the piano and she would play a tune. Just by watching and listening, I’d play it back to her. Next thing I knew, I was singing in church, doing talent shows, and joined choir at school.
I listen to just about every single genre and decade there is. A few artists that have influenced my own singing and songwriting journey would have to be Alicia Keys, Tori Kelly, and Lady Gaga. While I didn’t start songwriting until I was about 15 years old, it was a natural progression from my passion for music. I remember feeling like there wasn’t any music catching my attention like before. I was getting bored with hearing the same songs over and over again. Then I asked myself, why don’t I just start making my own music?
One defining moment in my music career was writing my first song and having the opportunity to have it professionally recorded with my a cappella group. I would say the experience was a significant milestone that made me realize no matter how much work goes on behind the scenes, I truly loved every single second of it. I also had a chance to record a few songs at Luminous Sound Studio in Dallas, Texas. I was in awe the second I walked through those doors. I felt honored to be in a studio where Grammy award winning artists and producers have created music. My first time there, I remember looking at all the awards and Vanilla Ice was casually walking to his session. Never in a million years did I think I would run into him. I was a lucky enough to briefly talk to him and get a quick picture!
Through my music, I aim to inspire others to pursue their dreams and embrace their passions. Whether I’m exploring themes of love, loss, or self-discovery, I strive to create songs that resonate with listeners on a deep emotional level.
For aspiring musicians, my advice is to keep pushing forward, stay true to your authentic self, and never let anyone dim your light. The music industry is full of challenges, but with perseverance and dedication, you can achieve your goals.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The path of a musician is rarely a smooth one. While creating music can be rewarding, the challenges are equally significant. One of the biggest hurdles I’ve encountered is surprisingly songwriting. It’s not always a straightforward process. There’s been plenty of times where the words and melodies simply don’t flow and it can become frustrating.
Another obstacle is the constant pressure to please others. I think it’s important to remember that not everyone will appreciate your music, and that’s okay. The key is to stay true to your own artistic vision and create the music you love, regardless of what others may think.
To truly grow as an artist, it’s essential to embrace new opportunities and step outside of your comfort zone. By saying “yes” to different experiences, whether it’s collaborating with other artists or performing in unfamiliar venues, you can expand your horizons and develop your skills.
Finally, maintaining consistency can be a challenge. The creative process can be unpredictable, and it’s not always easy to stay motivated. However, by setting realistic goals and developing a solid work ethic, it’s possible to overcome these obstacles and continue to produce high-quality music.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My songwriting process often begins with a chord progression or a beat, followed by the melody and lyrics. I can go from looping a sample I found to creating something from my guitar or piano depending on the vibe I’m on in that moment. Melodies come easier to me than words. However, I’ve developed a unique approach: lying on the floor and gazing at the ceiling or simply putting my hair up often sparks creativity. I know it might be weird techniques for others, but I say do whatever works for you! As much as I enjoy writing alone, I love to write with others. You could be stuck trying to figure out what fits best for the song and someone else comes in with maybe one or two words to change the game. There’s just this beautiful, constant flow of ideas that you can’t get by yourself. A proud moment that will forever be a constant for me is the thrill of hearing my songs transformed from simple voice memos into fully produced recordings. It blows me away. I don’t think I’ll ever get over hearing the final product of any song. It’s like a breath of fresh air that also keeps me going.
