Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Mavrakos.
Hi Emily, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hi! My name is Emily Mavrakos and I am the Director of Mavrakos Media. Mavrakos Media is a Photography and Videography company. We do everything from portrait and event photography, to short films and music video shoots.
I went to film school at F.I.R.S.T Institute in Maitland, FL where I learned every aspect of film and creative media. I’ve always had a passion for the film and photography industry, but high school was when I really started realizing that I wanted to make it my career. I took many photography, media, and communications, video editing, and creative media classes in high school, including making videos for the morning update, live broadcasting, and running a segment on my school’s radio station.
I went to high school in Massachusetts, and there were no good film schools in my area, so I did a lot of research and came across F.I.R.S.T Institute. I took the chance of a lifetime and moved all the way to Florida, and it was the best decision of my life. Here in Florida, not only have I been able to learn all about the film industry, but I’ve been able to learn a lot about myself as a person, and what I’m passionate about. So, I created Mavrakos Media to kickstart my career in doing what I love most. Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have definitely been some challenges along the way, business-related and personal, but I’ve been able to successfully learn from the mistakes and hard times and grow from them, bettering myself and my company. It’s definitely tough being a very young and freshly graduated film student in this industry, but I’m a hard worker and dedicated person which is a very important attribute to have, especially in a competitive industry. I think this quality is one of my strengths because I’m able to quickly learn and adapt, and take what I’ve learned and apply it to my work so I’m able to work on my projects to the best of my ability.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Mavrakos Media specializes in mostly photography, but I and my team have also worked on many music videos, short films, mock commercials, and live events. My favorite project was a music video I made for an artist located in Missouri, who flew down here to Orlando just to have me and my team help her bring her vision to life. I collaborated with another local production company located here in Orlando, Broach Studios, to work on her video. The video came out perfect, and just what she wanted. It was so heartwarming to see her reaction when I sent the project to her when it was finally finished! Weeks and weeks of hard work, location scouting, paperwork, zoom meetings, storyboarding, editing, etc., and at the end of it all, it’s always so worth it.
It always brings me so much joy to make someone’s day with my work.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
My whole family has been my biggest cheerleaders throughout it all, and without their support and love, I wouldn’t be here today. I also have my classmates from film school to thank, as we have worked on so many projects together. It has taught me so much about teamwork and friendship, and I’ve made so many memories and relationships along the way.
F.I.R.S.T Institute is really where all of my knowledge and experience comes from, so most of the credit goes to the teachers and mentors at this wonderful school.
