Today we’d like to introduce you to Jared Sylvia.
Hi Jared, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been drawn to art and storytelling, and that’s really what drives everything I create. I started my journey as a freelance designer and illustrator in Orlando, FL, building my skills over time while experimenting with different styles and techniques. Early on, I became fascinated with stippling—placing countless tiny dots to create texture and depth—which became one of the hallmarks of my work. That meditative process aligns with how I see the world: a series of small, meaningful moments that together create something larger.
Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work with some incredible clients and brands, including The Smashing Pumpkins, Guns N’ Roses, Polycade, and The Ghost Inside. Whether it’s creating tour posters, album covers, or merch, I’ve always tried to tell stories through my visuals—blending surrealism, psychedelic elements, and playful, thought-provoking narratives.
It hasn’t been a straight path, though. Working as a freelancer means balancing creative expression with the realities of deadlines and client expectations. But that’s also where the fun is—pushing myself creatively while staying adaptable. I’ve recently focused on personal projects that reflect themes like post-apocalyptic love, transformation, and the tension between chaos and serenity. I’m always looking for new ways to explore these narratives, whether through client work or passion projects.
Each piece I create, whether for myself or a client, is about more than just design—it’s about visual storytelling, creating something that resonates and leaves a lasting impression.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth road. Freelance life can be rewarding, but it’s also full of challenges. One of the biggest struggles has been balancing creativity with the business side of things—meeting deadlines, managing multiple projects, and keeping clients happy while still staying true to my own artistic vision. There have been times where burnout creeps in, especially when the pressure to constantly create and promote myself on social media starts to feel overwhelming.
Another challenge has been finding a steady rhythm between client work and personal projects. I’ve worked with some amazing clients—The Smashing Pumpkins, Polycade, The Ghost Inside—but the constant push to make something unique for each project while maintaining my own style isn’t always easy. It can feel like a balancing act between delivering what a client needs and making sure the work still reflects who I am as an artist.
There were definitely moments where I questioned if I was on the right path. Freelance work can be unpredictable, and not every project lands the way I imagined. But those struggles have also shaped how I approach my work now—focusing on storytelling, staying adaptable, and making room for personal projects that bring me joy. Every challenge has taught me something new, and it’s all part of the journey.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a freelance designer and illustrator based in Orlando, FL, and I specialize in creating surreal, story-driven visuals with a psychedelic twist. My work often focuses on blending bold imagery with deeper narratives—whether it’s for album covers, tour posters, or merchandise. I love using stippling, a technique where countless tiny dots build texture and depth, because it adds an organic, almost meditative quality to my pieces.
Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work with incredible clients, including The Smashing Pumpkins, Guns N’ Roses, Polycade, and The Ghost Inside. I’m known for merging chaotic elements with playful or introspective themes—whether it’s creating wild concert posters or designing a thoughtful album cover about transformation.
What I’m most proud of is my ability to infuse emotion and narrative into my work. I aim to create visuals that stick with people—something they can connect with on a personal level. I think what sets me apart is my focus on storytelling through illustration. For me, it’s not just about making something look cool; it’s about capturing a moment, a feeling, or a concept that resonates long after someone sees it.
Balancing all of that—while staying true to my style and navigating client expectations—has been both challenging and rewarding. I find joy in those moments where art and storytelling come together, and that’s the magic I try to bring to every project, big or small.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love the incredible food options in Orlando. I hate Disney. Just kidding (sort of). For real though I hate the traffic on I 4.
