Life & Work with Josephine Baker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josephine Baker.

Hi Josephine, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My journey began when I was very young! Probably around maybe even 3 or 4. I’d always loved the arts, from acting, playing in theater shows as a kid and ending up in the newspaper, to drawing whatever I saw around the house, to even dabbling in music like playing the piano. As I got older, I began delving into more and more arts I was drawn to, such as photography and filmography, which then turned into me wanting to try modeling and get more into acting. I did acting classes, improv classes all that, even took acting/theater class up in school! Unfortunately, I ended up losing somewhat of my passion for acting due to the shadiness I began to learn about the entertainment business… So, it sort of hindered me from going any further with acting… I tried doing a bit more modeling but found that modeling isn’t entirely for me either… I believe my years of skill in photography and retouching and wanting almost entire control over my image became more my priority than letting photographers I don’t entirely know or trust to just take my image and do whatever they please with it without even any retouching. I feel like TRUE models need no makeup or even any retouching and you can shoot them from any angle and you’ll always capture their beauty. I however don’t feel I’m that way. So now I prefer if I am to “model” it’s with those I trust, and where I am able to have some creative control and control over my own image. I prefer it this way. My focus has now become more to be behind the scenes, creative director, maybe music producer, photo retoucher, or even video editor. So that’s where I am now currently, learning the creative directing craft as well as music producing! Maybe even later begin a clothing line, which has been another goal of mine!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I would say the road has been somewhat smooth in the sense that, I’ve transitioned into one art into another fairly seamlessly. Now in terms of any of those artistic skills taking off into a successful financial direction is what’s been a bit of the difficult part because what it truly takes is who you know. Who will be that one person that will believe enough in you to just give you a chance. That chance they take on you could be the one thing that could change your life forever, unfortunately not everyone finds that right person to give them that right opportunity or chance. I feel like that’s where I am now, though I’ve met a lot of people who said this and that, people are really just all talk most of the time, unfortunately… but I’m not doubtful that it will come along eventually and I have no plans on giving up! Art is my heart!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Well, I do a bit of everything in the artsy creative field! But I’d say currently my specialty would be photo retouching and video editing! I’d say I’m known for my appearance more than anything, which inspired/influenced my Avatar/Na’vi edits! So, I turn people/celebrities into Avatars/Na’vi. People would every now and again say I looked like an Avatar from the movie so I turned myself into one through editing and then began editing others into Na’vi! I’m most proud of my ever-developing skill in the arts and my Avatar/Na’vi creations!

What sets me apart is my uniqueness overall, my personality, and my artwork.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Comfortability, happiness, and no stress. No feelings of obligations to anyone or anything.
