Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua McCain.
Hi Joshua, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
“Music is in my blood” my parents used to tell me growing up. I have always had an ear for music and decided to make it a side career after studying Music Production at Daytona State College. I create musical content for my clients. Sometimes it’s a simple podcast intro or jingle, and sometimes an entire musical piece while arranging it with instruments.
One of the fingerprints on my work is that I record all the live instruments myself in my home studio. I have been blessed to build a professional acoustically treated studio equipped with all the essentials necessary to produce a quality product.
The fueling force behind why I created my own music is that being a musical artist is very expensive and money wasn’t something I had very much of. In the beginning, I chose to use what I had available in my hands. I know take this skill to bring extra income into my household all while doing what I love to do.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has been smooth. However, it has been a long road to get to the point where I was satisfied with my own work and that it would compete with the industry standards in how the music sounds. My biggest struggle as a musical content creator and small business owner is drive. When you have a small business, you answer to yourself and are responsible to meet your own deadlines that you have set for yourself. You will be as successful as the risks and sacrifices you are willing to make.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
On a weekly basis, I have clients book studio sessions to record their singing and even rapping. On top of that, I communicate through email with clients that have an idea of what they want but don’t really know how to make it happen. The goal is to make their vision a reality in a step-by-step process by creating unique music geared to their preference. I really enjoy seeing my client’s work released on Apple Music, Spotify, Pandora, and the like. At this point, there are over 2 dozen songs that have my fingerprint through making the music, beat, or just recording their vocals. I decided to become an artist in 2016 when I released my first single “All Praise to You” by Joshua McCain. Since then, I have had two names that I operate under. “Joshua McCain” for my worship and instrumental music and “JK RoC” for my Christian hip hop genre of music. I work a full-time job as well so any time that I have at home is spent with my family or in my studio. My studio is open to clients on Saturdays and Mondays and any content creation can begin with just a simple email to get things started.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
An app that I use for inspiration is Splice. This app allows you to hear recorded samples of voices and instruments. When I have creators’ block, I’ll open the app and search samples until I find a sound that jogs my creativity.
