Life & Work with Kimberly Thomas of Katy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Thomas.

Kimberly Thomas

Hi Kimberly, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
As a little girl, growing up in a COGIC Christian church, I sang and dance. But that was never enough for me. As I became bored with singing and dancing, I would sit in the back of church, doing my Barbie’s hair. I would do her hair all types of styles. I was just so in love with Barbie’s hair. I began to take closer notice to when my mother did my hair. I would try to imitate what she did. And by the age of 7, I was doing my own hair for school. I was so good that my friends started asking I do their hair. Then I started doing my family members hair. It just trickled down. I always became the local stylist. And for a decent price. Although I’ve been in and out of corporate America, I’ve always fell back to doing hair. Being a mom of 9 children, I always found more time with just doing hair. Making men and women feel beautiful, all while still having time to be a full time mom. It’s not easy. I make it seem like so. But it’s far from it. With that being said, after chasing so many degrees, I realized that getting my cosmetology license made more sense.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not! Juggling 9 kids, schooling, health issues….i have little to no support or help. It has never been easy. Some days are harder than others. Some nights I don’t sleep. But because I am their provider, and I love doing what I do, it’s all worth it.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am in the hair industry! I mean I am in more than just the hair industry, but this is what I’ve decided to focus on. Relocating to Texas, I’ve noticed the high demand of beauticians. There’s so many high priced, unprofessional and professional hairstylists, that there’s so much room for me to thrive as an old school beautician. Getting my Cosmetology license and working on clientele has been my main focus lately. I am so proud of myself for taking the leap of faith and putting myself out there in this cruel judgmental world! Being of a mom of 9 is not easy. People always have something to say. But I am firm faith believer! God would never hand me more than I can bare.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I’m very genuine. I’m high spirited! If at any point I’m having an off day, and I have clients, if I can’t get my attitude to turn around, I will cancel. And reschedule if possible. I wouldn’t dare do someone’s hair with a bad spirit. Their hair most likely wouldn’t be my standard and the experience for them may not be too great.
