Life & Work with LaDeanna Downs of Historic Longwood

Today we’d like to introduce you to LaDeanna Downs.

LaDeanna Downs

Hi, LaDeanna. We appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
June 2021 is when I started my apprenticeship under Philly John Campbell at Southern Ink Tattoo. I caught on quickly, so I was granted my first real tattooing experience, about three months in, with one of Philly’s regular clients! It was a simple traditional rose I had designed, and when I finished it, I knew that this was my career.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been the smoothest as far as building a clientele because there are so many artists out there, but I’m so blessed to have the clients I do, that my apprenticeship went so smoothly, and that I’m still here at the shop I started at. I love the artists that I work with here. We help build each other up, so I know things will improve as long as we keep moving forward and pushing ourselves as artists.

I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a tattoo artist who specializes in traditional/neo-traditional tattoos. I’m not sure I’d say I was known for anything yet because I’m still a tattertot, but I’m working to solidify my art style. I love all things Nintendo, I watch quite a bit of anime, and I love making mash-ups when I can and bright colors for tattoos. I’m most proud of my loving and supportive husband, who has helped facilitate this difficult change from a guaranteed paycheck to the life of a fledgling artist, and my son, whom I strive to do the best for every day. As far as what sets me apart, I can curate a design based on what references/ideas my clients give me and chameleon it into my unique style.

Any big plans?
I plan to keep growing as an artist, learning as much as possible to hone my skills further, and build my clientele. I’m looking forward to seeing what my hard work yields and the difference in my style as I continue.
