Hi LaMar, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello, my name is LaMar Penick. I am a freelance traveling photographer servicing all areas. I purchased my first camera back in 2019; during my first year with my camera, I invested all of my time into it. Learning all the settings, functions, and buttons. After taking a year to understand my camera, I was ready to start my business in 2020. When 2020 arrived, I had my website created and ready to go live starting in January, but the world was about to take a complete 360, and covid took over everyone’s life. I was currently working for Hilton as a supervisor at the time covid begin and was furloughed and sent home for four months. During that time, I was so devastated, but to my surprise, I was getting booked left and right my business was able to thrive. Once I returned back to work, I had to make a decision to pick between my business and someone else… I picked me and it was the best decision of my life I went on to running a very successful, lucrative business winning awards and being featured in magazines/articles.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The road has been everything but smooth. I faced a lot of challenges it being my first business I ever ran. I had to learn and develop how to run a business and learned by trial and error. One of my struggles was pricing my services to help cover my expenses and cost of living.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a photographer that specializes and known for my maternity photos. I am very proud of the quality and creativity I am able to add to my client’s memories. One of the things that set me apart from other photographers was having rentable maternity Robes available for my clients. I was the first to do so, and set me really apart from all others.
Who else deserves credit for your story?
I was blessed to meet two amazing mentors my photography mentor Mallary and my business mentor Bethany Epps Taylor. Meeting these two business owners turned decades into days. They told me the honest truth about business and pushed me passed my comfort zone. I truly wouldn’t be here without them.
