Today we’d like to introduce you to Lee-Anne Baker Tressler (DJ Lovelee.
Hi Lee-Anne, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Interview for magazine
Firstly I would like to say how truly honoured I am to have been asked to write my story for this magazine ! Is alot to squeeze in. I am a Londoner who recently moved to Orlando….. I have been coming to the USA since the age of 5 as my grandma and uncles immigrated to Florida in the late 80s and continued to visit family and DJ here and throw music events since the young age of 19….(bio attached )
My musical journey started in the dj world at the young age of 13, I had a near death exp after skool i got run over by a drunk driver, I almost lost a leg and my head injuries were so bad they couldn’t operate on my leg for at least 24 hours. I guess you could say in the loneliness of being in hospital for so long i found my calling through my walkman laid up in the hospital i found all the london pirate radio stations, we used to be able to text in and get shout outs by the djs and mcs and from there i found some friendly ones, they took me under their wings!
Trying to be an artist in a family that looked down on any kind of personal expression and being told you will never amount to anything on a daily basis, just because i wanted to follow my dreams, led me to be thrown out of my home at the age of 15, guess where i ended up…yes in the studio with a sleeping bag, learning how to mix on vinyl thanks to a few good ones i had met along the way, that are still my closest friends to this day 35 years later.
If you check my bio you will see by the age of 19 i was playing at clubs like “ministry of sound and “Fabric” amongst others and was getting very well known on the dj scene back in London and also here as i would bring over my vinyl to play, when coming on vacations to see my grandmother in my early 20s…….by the age of 29 after playing in quite a few countries and all over radio and clubs in london in 2006 i had my son, that’s when everything went from Vinyl to digital and i then took 4 years out to raise my son, after suffering Domestic Violence from his father while pregnant i became a recluse and hadn’t touched the turntables or even listened to any kind of music for years, then a friend of 20 years came knocking at my door with 2 CDJs in his hands and told me “if you dont do something with these we are going to have problems …you are wasting your talent !
That gave me the get up and go. I needed to come back out of my shell now riddled with ptsd and anxiety. I forced myself to get back out there again. Pretty much since around 2010. I have strived to rebuild my fan base, 3 radio shows a week back in London on Amsterdam and Londons Most wanted, UK Raw and various others, doing podcast for various djs all over the world and building back up respect out here again, while coming to visit my family with my son over the last 15 years…..we moved here 7 years ago…my mom was living here also by this
point ….
In 2017, I got married and since then, I’ve been involved in around 30 events. I’ve promoted and rebuilt my name in the music scene, and my reputation is rapidly growing once again as a serious musical contender on the underground circuit. Currently, I promote for “Best of Breaks” based in Orlando. It’s a fantastic team that puts on amazing events and brings in top DJs from all over the USA and the world.
I also have a regular radio show with www.mix93fm.com. One of the station’s owners, who also runs Monsta Entertainment, collaborates with me for events and weddings, among other things. I’m also passionate about supporting women in the music scene. Whenever I come across up-and-coming female artists online, I make a point to support and guide them however I can. Navigating the music industry is tough, and I hold a deep respect for the craft. I’ve never subscribed to the influencer mentality or relied on superficial tactics to gain attention. For me, music is a vital part of life—like brushing my teeth. I simply can’t breathe without it.
I’ve worked incredibly hard to keep my name clean and to be recognized as a serious musical artist. Now that I’m closer to the action in Orlando, Tampa, and Miami, I’m excited for what the future holds.
My son and I have faced more struggles than we ever anticipated. We are currently living in a domestic violence shelter and trying to save for a new home. It’s an overwhelming challenge being a single mom, especially with the added stress of trying to resolve our immigration status. After leaving my husband for reasons beyond my control, I now find myself in a legal limbo. Without a Social Security number, I can’t get a bank account or a driver’s license, and I can’t work legally. Yet, I’m expected to come up with $6,000 in immigration fees just to file paperwork.
I’ve reached out to countless charities, legal aid organizations, and other resources, but I’m still stuck in this relentless journey. Despite everything, I refuse to be beaten. I’m doing everything I can to survive and hold my head high. I take on any work I can find online, tapping into my strong resume that includes roles from recruitment and office management to waitressing and DJ gigs. My son, bless his soul, has even become a little entrepreneur, buying and selling items online to help us save. He once told me he’d rather eat noodles every day if it meant we could afford our legal status.
I have no choice but to keep going. Failure is not an option. I didn’t come this far just to come this far.
God bless. Love, Lee
