Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Hyman.
Hi Liz, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always been drawn to creative work, and hairdressing became my way of connecting with people while also expressing myself. It started with experimenting on friends, which turned into formal training, and eventually, a career. Initially I thought of haircutting as something everyone needs, and a “job” I could do in any city I wanted to be in. After becoming licensed in Florida I moved to Seattle, WA where I was hit with a big dose of reality and joined a salon that offered advanced training. That’s where I really grew as a person, and professional. I moved to Portland, OR a few years later to explore a different take on the beauty industry that ultimately led me to renting a chair with no clientele (not recommended.) But as it turns out, I’m pretty good at the business side of things and I was successful enough to pay the bills. That new found freedom allowed me to really lean into the artistic world of hair. Eventually life led me back to my hometown of Orlando where I opened my own salon after about 5 years working in a handful of local salons.
Little Sister is my love letter to my hometown and to everyone who walks through the door. It’s a reminder that dreams do come true, and that sometimes, the best things in life are the ones we create ourselves.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Ha! Of course not. There were many—doubting myself, navigating finances, finding the courage to break away from the familiar. Starting a business as a creative means wearing a lot of hats, and some of them don’t fit easily at first. But each obstacle helped me become more grounded in who I am and what I want Little Sister to represent.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I would call myself a haircutting specialist, known for air-dried hair. I’ve honed my craft to create lived-in, everyday haircuts that embrace your natural texture and require minimal maintenance. I want you to love the hair you already have. I’m here to meet you where you are and help with realistic results.
It’s not just a salon—it’s an environment where people can feel seen. I prioritize artistic expression, individuality, and authenticity. I built Little Sister to be a space where clients and stylists alike can show up fully as themselves. There’s a sense of emotional honesty here.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
When I see someone really see themselves in the mirror after a haircut and I can tell they feel confident, that’s what makes me happy. Countless times I’ve had clients tell me no one has ever styled their hair natural, or asked questions about their lifestyle, and most importantly not judged them for their lack of routine. We’ve all had bad salon experiences and working on changing that narrative for people brings me joy and keeps me motivated.
