Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Luisa Lugo
Hi Maria Luisa, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Maria Luisa Lugo, but most people know me as “Malu.” My passion for photography started when I was very young. I was involved in many extracurricular activities like dance, sports, modeling, art, and music, all of which nurtured my creative side. My mom used to capture those moments with her old camera, retracing my growth and experiences through photographs.
As I grew older, modeling became a more serious part of my life. My favorite part of it was visiting studios and seeing how complex and creative photoshoots were. The process fascinated me—it was not just fun but also inspiring to see how lighting, direction, and collaboration came together to create the final results.
That’s when my curiosity about how a camera works and how the magic behind the lens happens really began. The lighting, the angles, the artistic choices—all of it captured my attention and has remained my favorite part of photography ever since. Also, I started taking photos of my friends and working in different jobs to get enough money to get my own camera and equipment. Being a photographer brings me a lot of happiness, new challenges in every new photoshoot, getting to know and work with people to grow together (it’s a teamwork) and explore new places.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. Photography is not as easy as people think—it’s not just pressing a button to capture the moment. To be a great photographer, you need a lot of practice, knowledge, and study on how everything works, such as lighting, composition, and the rule of thirds. But learning is the most fun part. The hardest part is getting clients and gigs. However, it can all be made creative by building a portfolio: tell your friends, post on social media, collaborate with models, and invest in personal projects to grow. When you love what you do, it’s not hard work because you enjoy every moment of it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in weddings, couples, and branding local artists. I’m proud of how I’ve grown in my pathway and achieved goals such as being part of a team and working with a great photographer I admire, Caro Montes Photography. I’ve also collaborated with many local artists to build their portfolios and social media presence.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I owe much of my success to my parents, who have always supported me in every decision I’ve made and continuously motivated me. I’m also deeply grateful to my friend Carolina, who trusted me and taught me a lot in the field. Lastly, I thank God for giving me strength and wisdom to achieve every goal I set. I am also thankful for everyone who has trusted in my work and allowed me to grow as a photographer.
