Life & Work with Maria Velasco of Lake Buena Vista

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Velasco.

Hi Maria, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
When I graduated from the University of South Alabama in 2020 with a bachelor of arts in strategic communication and a minor in marketing, I developed a strong interest in graphic and web design. I started teaching myself how to use Adobe applications to create logo designs and marketing materials for small and upcoming businesses. I also taught myself the dynamics of web design platforms such as Squarespace and Wix. I eventually acquired more and more design clients, as well as grew my social media following. This was when I started Maria Velasco Designs, which is now a design agency that offers custom creative services for business and personal milestones.

You wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
It certainly has had its ups and downs. I was a pandemic graduate with little experience, so I had to start from zero and navigate through owning and running a business while trying to perfect my craft.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I design websites and branding and marketing materials for small businesses. I also recently started creating custom designs for personal milestones such as wedding invites. I mainly specialize in graphic design and enjoy creating logo designs and branding for new businesses. I’m known for my simple yet sophisticated approach to my minimalist aesthetic. I am most proud of how far I’ve come by self-teaching myself everything I know about design, regardless of the obstacles I’ve faced. My willingness to adapt to my client’s needs and help their vision come to life sets me apart from others.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting?
I recommend someone starting to take advantage of youtube tutorials because you can learn anything there. I would also tell them not to be afraid to put themselves out there and start their own business because it gives them the creative freedom every designer craves.
