Today we’d like to introduce you to Marie P. Anderson
Hi Marie P. , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Marie P. Anderson is a recognized authority on fashion and beauty, with an intimate understanding of its glamorous and darker sides. Her journey began as a child model in Cocoa Beach, participating in her mother’s charity fashion shows. Over the years, she has become a prominent figure in the industry, known for discovering supermodel Cindy Crawford and mentoring numerous other top models. Anderson is an industry expert, author, public speaker, mental health advocate, and passionate model rights champion. “Sexual misconduct and toxic work environments in fashion are global issues,” she asserts. “Why do I care? Because I’ve personally experienced the trauma of sexual assault.” With forty years of experience as a model executive and former model, Anderson is committed to creating change and ensuring a safer, more equitable future for those in the fashion world.
As an in-demand public speaker and Mother Agent, Marie is fearless when it comes to shining the light on the dark corners of the fashion industry. Issues ranging from body image, eating disorders, and substance abuse to trauma and mental health are addressed both in Marie’s revealing speaking engagements as well as in her candid conversations with new models. “Love can transform,” observes the former Vice President of Elite/Chicago Models and founder of Aria Model & Talent Management. “And that’s what I do with my models, hopefully, is to empower and transform them.”
But what truly motivates this dynamic businesswoman and media personality is deeply intimate. “Suicide Prevention and Suicide Awareness are at the core of what I do. I tried myself twice, I have thirty-six friends that were successful, and I accidentally witnessed a total stranger plunging to his death from a Penthouse window,” reveals Marie about past traumas that have shaped her purpose. She shares her viewpoints about Suicide Prevention and Suicide Awareness publicly, making it her ultimate goal to help those who may find themselves in this challenging and painful situation.
Marie is working on her fourth book, a memoir, which delves deeper into how she overcame personal and professional challenges—and thrived. She’s also authored several must-read books for aspiring models: Model: The Complete Guide to Becoming a Professional Model and Model: The Complete Guide for Men and Women, and the audiobook The Wizard of Editorial: How to Really Become a Successful Model.
In addition, the founder of Boss Babe Models, a personalized one-on-one hourly career coaching service, has been interviewed in Rolling Stone Magazine and featured on 60 Minutes Australia, 66 Minutes France, SKY TV United Kingdom, VICE TV America, and various podcasts.
The Cocoa Beach, Florida, native divides her time between the Sunshine State and her home base of Chicago, Illinois. Marie holds a 2nd-degree black belt in Shidokan Karate, through Chicago Fitness Center, and uses this skill to teach her models self-defense. “I want my kids to fly,” she reveals about her goal of nurturing her models in their careers and mental health. “I want to give them as much information as possible and for them to think for themselves so they can be powerful individuals.”
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The path has never been easy. For nearly everyone in the industry, regardless of gender, challenges persist. These include a lack of financial transparency within many global agencies, widespread sexual misconduct both in agencies and studios, and a general lack of understanding around mental health issues such as eating disorders, sexual trauma, anxiety, and even suicide. Moreover, the rise of AI has had a significant impact, leading to many human models losing income as digital avatars and virtual influencers take center stage. The industry has also become oversaturated with self-proclaimed “professionals” through social media, and the current global economy has left many clients with shrinking budgets for their productions. These factors continue to make it a challenging and uncertain road for those trying to navigate the global fashion and modeling world.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Marie expertly juggles two distinct careers: managing a small, select group of models through Marie P. Anderson, Mother Agent Management, and offering personalized, one-on-one industry coaching via Boss Babe Models. While she doesn’t run a traditional booking agency, Marie provides hands-on management for a carefully curated small group of models worldwide. She offers what she affectionately calls “rent-an-agent” coaching sessions. Seven years ago, she transitioned from the traditional agency model to focus on these more tailored services, enabling her to offer greater personal attention and guidance.
For decades, Marie has been a trusted resource in the fashion and entertainment industries. She offers invaluable mentorship and insights to help models and creatives elevate their careers. Her reputation as a reliable and empowering guide has made her an indispensable figure to those she works with.
Among her proudest accomplishments are overcoming childhood sexual abuse and domestic violence during her teen years at Cocoa Beach High, building and selling her multi-million dollar agency, ARia Model & Talent Management, to Ford Models New York, and maintaining over twenty years of sobriety. She is also a second-degree black belt in Shidokan Karate, achieved at Chicago Fitness Center, and has scouted some of the most successful models in the industry over her 40-year career.
Marie’s unwavering commitment to transparency, advocacy, and ethical practices distinguishes her from other agents. She has spent years speaking out about the industry’s challenges while mentoring hundreds of models and creatives to achieve lasting success. Her reputation for honesty and dedication to her clients has made her a sought-after ally in the fashion world.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
Throughout her journey, Marie has been profoundly shaped by the guidance and support of many mentors, but her most significant influences remain her parents, Bruce Anderson Jr. and Marcelle Anderson. Her father, a rocket scientist at NASA during the Apollo Moon Program, taught her the power of teamwork and the belief that anything is possible when you have the right people around you. Her mother, despite her personal struggles with schizophrenia, was a passionate community activist who instilled in Marie the importance of advocating for those who cannot speak for themselves. From her parents, Marie learned the values of resilience, collaboration, and using one’s voice to drive meaningful change.
In her professional life, one of the most profound influences was editorial fashion photographer Stan Malinowski. Stan introduced Marie to the world of high fashion, routinely taking her to Europe and New York to shoot covers for global magazines and editorial spreads before returning to Chicago. These experiences gave her a deep appreciation for the diverse beauty of Couture fashion, as well as the local catalog clients in Chicago. Through this mentorship and education, Marie honed her keen eye for spotting talent, discovering iconic beauties like a young Cindy Crawford while working as a new agent at Stewart Talent.
