Today we’d like to introduce you to Marle Aguilar.
Hi Marle, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I can remember the exact moment when I knew I wanted to be a business owner. I was about 10 years old, and I had asked my parents for an easy bake oven. I had my own bakery business called “The three sisters”. We sold brownies, funfetti mini cakes, and pretend coffee. In middle school, I remember spending the night at my cousin’s house, she was an artist and we stayed up one night drawing out what my bakery would look like in the future when I was to become “grown-up” lol. I wish I still had that sketch.
Flash forward to college where I majored in biomedical sciences and then went on to more schooling to earn a second degree in physical therapy. During school, we were under very strict study hours and had little to no time to work a real job. At that time, I decided to bake cakes on the side to make some extra money on the side while attending school for physical therapy. My mother (cake designer/baker) encouraged me to bake for my family and friends. With her expertise and knowledge, I was able to learn from her and move forward with my “side hobby”.
My mother has 20 + years of experience in the culinary world. So I’ve been around cakes practically most of my life. As a practicing therapist, I needed a creative outlet that allowed me to express the right side of my brain. So I decided to kick it up a notch and team up with my very talented mother (Rosa) to establish R&M Custom Cakes. My side hobby soon turned into the business it is today. Together as mother and daughter, we have created a business that is not only our passion but our joy.
We specialize in wedding cakes and custom cakes for special occasions and have a blast creating each and every one. We are so thankful and appreciative of all of our customers and hope to continue providing a delicious cake to our community!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like many other small businesses, we have faced the obstacle of COVID. We are very thankful for our wonderful customers and regulars that kept us from having to close. As a fairly new business, we are faced with new challenges and trials that allow us to grow and improve our services.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
